Panasonic LUMIX S5 II Firmware Update Version 2.2 and S5 IIX Version 1.3 Announced

Panasonic recently announced the upcoming release of two new firmware updates for its LUMIX S5 II in version 2.2 and LUMIX S5 IIX in version 1.3. These “minor” firmware updates will add an AF-point scope function, improve manual focus assist, and improve the high-resolution mode. So, let’s take a closer look at everything new!

The Panasonic LUMIX S5 II and LUMIX S5 IIX were introduced at the beginning of this year as successors to the LUMIX S5 and as a more affordable option compared to the flagship and video-centric LUMIX S1H. Both cameras have a lot in common, including a new 24.2MP full-frame CMOS image sensor with two native ISO (640 and 4000), in-body image stabilization, improved autofocus capabilities, and the possibility to record footage internally in 6K (3:2) or 5.9K (16:9) at up to 30 frames per second. If you missed it, make sure to take a look at my colleague Johnnie’s mini-documentary and review shot with the LUMIX S5 II here and our exclusive Lab Test here.

It’s always nice to see companies continuing to support and improve their products. Panasonic announced that the LUMIX S5 II and LUMIX S5 IIX will receive firmware updates to enhance their photo and video capabilities further.

Panasonic LUMIX S5 II and S5 IIX firmware updates – what’s new?

The Panasonic LUMIX S5 II firmware update version 2.2 and LUMIX S5 IIX version 1.3 are relatively minor updates, but here is what you’ll get, according to Panasonic:

  • AF-Point Scope function added: this function allows you to magnify the focus position during AF.
  • High-Resolution Mode: in high-resolution mode, the shutter speed can now be set to a maximum of 8 seconds with the long exposure noise reduction applied. Since both cameras have IBIS, a “Handheld High-Res” mode has been added to enable recording pictures with higher resolution even without a tripod.
  • Improved MF assist: you can now magnify the full-screen mode display in MF Assist up to around 20x.

As you can tell, these are not groundbreaking additions, but it’s always welcome and handy when companies update their cameras.
