Pelican Next-Generation Protector 2.0 Cases Announced – Stronger HPX Resin, New Latches, and Gridpoint Organization System

Pelican Next-Generation Protector 2.0 Cases Announced - Stronger HPX Resin, New Latches, and Gridpoint Organization System

Pelican has just announced their next-generation protector 2.0 cases, which is the most significant update to the classic hard-case lineup in years. All the cases will keep the same name, including the famous 1510/1560/1650/1400, but they’ll feature a new proprietary HPXP polymer shell material, a redesigned latch mechanism, and smaller modifications. Also, Pelican introduced new accessories for their cases, including a modular lid organization system with Gridpoint Panel Kits and Modpak Utility Pouches. So, let’s take a closer look at these!

American manufacturer Pelican has been making hard protective cases since 1976 and is clearly an industry standard. Indeed, the name β€œPelicase” is commonly used in the filmmaking world to define a hard case, even if it’s not made by Pelican but by another manufacturer. Pelican cases are used in a wide range of industries, including military, emergency services, and, of course, filmmaking and media industries. The company later expanded its product range to include racks and suitcases, such as the TRVL we review here.

However, something less known – and honestly, I also discovered it while writing this article – is that the hard cases we all know, including the famous 1510 most filmmakers have, are part of Pelican’s Protector series. Those hard cases have been a staple on film sets, in OB trucks, and inside rental facilities worldwide for decades. They’re known for surviving just about anything you throw at them, often lasting nearly a lifetime.

As the saying goes, β€œif it ain’t broken, don’t fix it,” and that’s exactly what Pelican did with their next-generation protector 2.0 cases. Indeed, this new generation does not reinvent the wheel. Instead, it builds on a proven foundation with targeted improvements to the areas that matter most to working professionals.

Next-generation protector 2.0 cases – what’s new

At the core of the update is a new proprietary HPX resin. According to Pelican, the reformulated material makes the Next Generation Protector 2.0 Series 12% tougher than previous models. However, all hard cases retain the same waterproof, dustproof, and crushproof characteristics that made the original line so popular.

Furthermore, the updated shell is designed to better withstand impacts, drops, and general abuse associated with life on set and airline travel. If you often fly with your camera package, including camera body, lenses, monitors, and wireless video systems, this increase in impact resistance is always welcome. Pelican also claims that the new HPX formulation improves UV resistance and overall stability in harsh environmental conditions.

Next, Pelican redesigned the push-button latch system on select models, including the 1510, 1560, 1650, and 1400. These latches are directly inspired by the latch mechanisms found on the Storm and AIR series. The upgraded latches should make it easier to access the interior of the hard cases, even with gloves on, while maintaining secure closure.

All models are available with a foam interior or divider set. The 1510 and 1560 are also offered in a Studio configuration with a divider set and lid organizer.

Lastly, on the 1510 and 1560 Studio models, Pelican also integrated wider, better-quality wheel housings to improve overall mobility. As a Pelican 1510 owner, I’ve always found the wheels the most painful part, even though DIY workarounds exist. This small but practical upgrade is much welcomed for anyone rolling cases through airports, production facilities, or across uneven terrain.

For filmmakers and content creators, one of the most thrilling additions is probably the upcoming Gridpoint modular lid organization system. Gridpoint panel kits are available for the 1510, 1560, and 1650 models and are designed to transform the inside of a Protector case lid into a customizable storage platform. The Gridpoint system supports both hook-and-loop and MOLLE-compatible accessories.

Next to the Gridpoint panel kits, Pelican is also launching Modpak Utility Pouches to complement the system. These soft pouches attach directly to the Gridpoint panel to hold and store batteries, media cards, cables, wireless transmitters, tools, and other small production essentials. The pouches feature a clear TPU window to see what’s inside and are made of 500D Nylon. At launch, four sizes are available: extra-small (2.5 x 3.5 x 4.5″), small (5.75 x 4.5 x 2.5″), medium (8.5 x 4.5 x 2.5″), and large (9 x 6 x 2.5″).

Price and availability

The Pelican Next Generation Protector 2.0 cases are available now. Prices remain fairly similar to the previous generation. For example, the Pelican 1510 with foam interior retails for $269.95. The Gridpoint Panel Kits start at $129.95, and Modpak Utility Pouches go from $24.95 for the extra-small to $49.95 for the larger model.
