PolarPro has launched the CineBlack filter, a ½-strength Black Mist diffusion filter also available in the Helix MagLock system. The filter softens harsh contrast, gently blooms highlights, and keeps shadow depth for a cinematic look. Let’s see what it can do!

Founded in 2011, PolarPro is a team of designers focused on creating high-end camera accessories like their lightweight, durable RoadRunner camera bags or metal-encased, color-coded Defender Pro body caps and lens covers that have an area inside the cap to hold an AirTag or memory card. The CineBlack filter is the latest addition to their lineup and expands their range of tools for filmmakers and photographers.

The look of film

The CineBlack filter softens digital contrast, producing a smoother highlight rolloff and a gentle bloom in bright areas. Shadows stay defined, so images keep their depth without looking flat. It’s designed to evoke Kodak cine film, and though optional, the included Lightroom presets offer a straightforward way to carry that look into post, or just use the filter on its own.

Build and technical details

• Glass: Chroma Series optical glass from Germany with anti-reflective, anti-fingerprint, and scratch-resistant layers.
• Frame and canister: 6061 aluminum, anodized and weather-sealed for durability and portability.
• Diffusion: ½‑strength Black Mist with ~90% light transmission for a blend of softness without altering exposure or color accuracy.
• Availability: Threaded versions (49 mm, 67 mm, 77 mm, 82 mm, 4×5.65″) and a Helix MagLock version that snaps on magnetically.

Compatibility and stacking

The filter is compatible with most cinema, mirrorless, and DSLR lenses, and pairs easily with the Helix system or LiteChaser rigs when using step-up rings. CineBlack can be stacked with NDs, VNDs, CPLs, or clear protective filters. For optimal highlight bloom control and halation, the company suggests placing it closest to the lens. As a note, the Helix MagLock version of the filter uses a universal 101mm filter size, so it fits any lens thread size when paired with the matching Helix base. Once the base is mounted, the filter snaps on magnetically.

Who it’s for

The CineBlack filter with the Helix MagLock variant is especially useful for fast-paced shoots, like run-and-gun setups, small crews, or solo operators, since the magnetic system saves time. It comes at a higher price, but that reflects its pro-grade build in general, with precision glass and multi-layer coatings, along with the MagLock system that lets you swap filters quickly and securely without threading. The included presets are a nice addition, making it easy to match the filter’s filmic tones in post.

How is it different from other Black Mist filters? According to the company, “CineBlack has a denser particle structure that produces a stronger highlight bloom and more pronounced halation, while still preserving depth in shadows and blacks.” Other filters with magnetic mounting exist, such as the ones from Tiffen or Maven, but each system works a bit differently and has its own “look”, so it comes down to which fits best in your workflow and style.
