RigStand Introduced – 15mm Rod Feet for Your Camera Rig

RigStand Introduced - 15mm Rod Feet for Your Camera Rig

A new British company called RigStand recently introduced their first product, a set of 15mm rod feet. Designed to snap securely to the base of your camera rig, these rod feet provide the convenience of placing your rig on the ground or any flat surface, ensuring that your camera remains stable without the risk of tipping to the left or right. So let’s take a closer look at this handy accessory that could save you from costly accidents!

At CineD, we are always delighted to discover new products designed “by filmmakers for filmmakers.” Also, with the advancements in 3D printing technology, it’s now easier to design and create custom-made products that solve real-life problems. We recently reported about the Fathom Camera Third Hand for the Aputure amaran F21/F22, a handy little 3D-printed tool to help you assemble and disassemble your lights. Furthermore, even “bigger players” like Zacuto now use 3D printers to create products like their Gratical/Kameleon EVF battery bracket.

Returning to our discussion regarding the product that shares its name with the company, let’s delve into the details of the RigStand 15mm rod feet.

The problem

If you have shot with a fully rigged camera setup, chances are you’ve experienced this issue on set: placing your camera rig on the ground or a table between takes, only to have it start tipping to the left or right.

Indeed, the distribution of weight on a camera rig often is uneven due to the numerous accessories hanging from all sides of the camera. Also, often the bottom of a camera rig is not flat due to a dovetail or quick-release plate. As a result, you risk your camera setup falling.

Some manufacturers developed products such as Kessler Crane with their Kwik Stand to solve that issue. While I love this system and have some in my camera kit, if you’re not in the Arca Swiss quick-release ecosystem, they might not be the best solution for you. This is where the RigStand could come in handy!

RigStand 15mm Rod Feet – features

The RigStand is a set of feet that snaps directly onto lightweight-standard 15mm rods (at the moment, no 19mm version is available).

The RigStands are 3D printed and made out of PLA plastic, while the tips of the feet are covered in TPU, a rubberized plastic. According to the company, a pair of RigStands weighs 54g/1.9oz, is 17mm/0.66in thick, and will lift your rig over 5cm/1.96in. By raising your rig and expanding its contact surface, you can be sure that it will not tip over unexpectedly.
