SAMYANG AF 75mm F1.8 X for FUJIFILM X-Mount Cameras Released

Samyang have just released their very lightweight and compact AF 75mm F1.8 X autofocus lens for FUJIFILM X-mount cameras. The lens covers APS-C sensors and gives you a field of view of around 21,9° with a minimum focusing distance of only 69cm. Let’s take a closer look at it!

Samyang is a South Korean manufacturer who is known as Rokinon in the US. If you are not familiar with the brand, my colleague Nino Leitner just did a full review on the Cine V-AF series for E-mount.

But if you are a user of mirrorless FUJIFILM X-mount cameras like the X-H2 (news article and review) or the X-H2S (news article, review and Lab Test) the compact AF 75mm F1.8 X autofocus lens could be really interesting for you.

AF 75mm F1.8 X – key features

Usually, a 75mm lens on a full-frame sensor is more of a portrait or beauty shot lens. It allows you to easily separate your subject from the background. When combined with an APS-C sensor and due to the crop factor, a 75mm lens “becomes” more of a 112,5mm equivalent, a medium telephoto lens.

The compact size and light weight of this lens is really impressive. The AF 75mm F1.8 X has a body length of 69,3mm / 2.7inch length and a weight of only 257g / 26.5oz. In combination with an X-H2/X-H2S, the lens is suitable for use on a gimbal or even on a drone.

Lens design

The AF 75mm F1.8 X lens design consists of 10 elements in 9 groups. The 2 HR (High Refractive) and 3 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements provide good contrast and resolution in all areas of the image. The F1.8 maximum aperture of the lens delivers an extremely narrow depth of field, so it can create a soft and smooth bokeh with a blurred background.

It has adopted the Samyang AF 2nd generation design such as a rubberized micro-patterned focus ring, a hidden red ring, matte finish, and also weather sealing applied to 5 different spots make it snow, dust, light-rain proofed.

Auto focus and custom switch

The AF 75mm F1.8 X has a fast and accurate autofocus that tracks the subject accurately and quickly and operates quietly and smoothly in video recording mode. That is extremely useful in shooting situations when you operate the camera handheld on a gimbal.

The lens has a “Preset Aperture Control” function on the “Custom Switch – Mode 2”. With this button, you can control the depth of field when you are recording in auto-focus mode. On the “Custom Switch – Mode 1”, it operates with the “Focus Control” function in manual focus shooting mode. You can adjust the focus simply by rotating the focus ring.
