SmallRig RA-S280 Light Stand Series Released

SmallRig RA-S280 Light Stand Series Released

SmallRig has recently introduced two light stand models to complement their new RC120 and RC220 COB LED fixtures: the RA-S280 and RA-S280A. Both stands feature an aluminum construction, reach a maximum height of 2.8m/9.2′, and can support a maximum payload of 5kg. They are now available for purchase starting at $70.

Although SmallRig has a solid reputation for producing good quality, affordably priced rigging accessories, the company has recently been tackling the lighting market by introducing 4 COB LED fixtures belonging to their RC120 and RC220 series.

Apparently, the Chinese brand is eager to offer customers an end-to-end lighting ecosystem. Indeed, they are now introducing the SmallRig RA-S280 light stand series to nicely complement their newborn LED lighting family. Let’s take a closer look.

SmallRig RA-S280 light stand series: overview

The new SmallRig RA-S280 light stand series consists of two black models: the RA-S280 and RA-S280A. They are basically identical, but the latter comes with an additional boom arm. Both products feature an air-cushioned shock-absorbing system that should guarantee gentle and safe operations when adjusting the height of the stand.

The light stand measures 94cm/37” when folded, it can reach a maximum height of 2.8m/9.2’, and can support a payload of 5kg. In my opinion, these specs can be a little limiting for general use but should do the work when rigging the lightweight SmallRig RC120 and RC220 lights.

The main vertical section consists of three thick aluminum rods of 35, 30, and 25mm in diameter. Their height is adjustable using one hand by opening/closing the flip-lock mechanism. This comes with an anodized finish to prevent corrosion.

The top of the stand has a flat design and hosts a 1/4”-20 stainless steel screw. At the bottom of the stand, three feet extend over an area with a maximum diameter of 1.2m/47.2” and a nylon tip covers each foot to prevent the stand from slipping.

SmallRig RA-S280A: with boom arm

The SmallRig RA-S280A includes a boom arm with an all-metal construction that is extendable from 95mm/37” up to 1.7m/5.6′. The boom arm can pivot and swivel up to 180° and features independent locking knobs for pan and tilt axis. This particular configuration can come in handy to extend the reach of the stand, especially if you’re trying to rig your lights overhead.
