Ultimate Vlogger Control? Sony GP-VPT2BT Wireless Remote for Mirrorless Cameras

Sony has just introduced a compact wireless shooting grip for its line of mirrorless cameras: the Sony GP-VPT2BT. This grip connects to your camera via Bluetooth, it features a built-in tripod, and several controls to trigger your camera wirelessly. Let’s take a closer look at this handy vlogging accessory!

Sony GP-VPT2BT Features

To complement its growing line of mirrorless cameras, Sony introduced the GP-VPT2BT. This wireless shooting grip that doubles as a small stand connects wirelessly to your camera via Bluetooth. It is compatible with various cameras, including the Sony Alpha α9 II, α9, α7R IV, α7R III, α7 III, α6600, α6400, α6100 and RX100 VII and RX0 II.

To mount your camera to the Sony GP-VPT2BT grip, there is one 1/4″-20 screw that you attach to your camera by turning a thumbwheel. Below the camera mount, there is a little flip switch that allows you to quickly rotate your camera 180° and enter in “selfie mode.” Finally, if you want to adjust your camera angle, there is a switch on the side of the grip to tilt your camera up and down.

There are five buttons on the Sony GP-VPT2BT: a Photo and a Movie button to trigger your camera, a zoom rocker if your camera/lens is compatible, a C1 button – for accessing a custom function I suppose – and a Lock switch. Also, there is a light indicator that tells you when you are recording or taking a picture.

Sony claims that its wireless grip is dust/moisture-proof. Otherwise, it is “not guaranteed.” There is very little info about the battery and expected battery life of the Sony GP-VPT2BT at the moment. Please note that if your camera is compatible with the Sony GP-VPT2BT, you’ll need to update your camera firmware.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony GP-VPT2BT will be available at the end of this month for $140.00/around 200.00€.

Not sure vlogging is the right marketing term. It’s a handle for operating the camera more sturdily for a wide range of film making applications.
