Sony RX1R III Announced – Compact Full-Frame Flagship With 61MP Sensor and AI Autofocus

Sony RX1R III Announced – Compact Full-Frame Flagship With 61MP Sensor and AI Autofocus

Sony has officially unveiled the RX1R III, the long-awaited third-generation model in its RX1R premium compact camera line. Designed for professionals and enthusiasts seeking uncompromising full-frame image quality in a highly portable form factor, the RX1R III builds on its predecessors by integrating the latest advancements from Sony’s imaging ecosystem.

When Sony released the RX1R II nearly a decade ago (yes, you read that right!), it made waves with its compact form factor, full-frame sensor, and fixed ZEISS 35mm F2 lens. At the time, we noted that it offered a rare combination of image quality and portability. However, it also had its limitations, particularly in autofocus performance and modern usability features.

A leap forward from the RX1R II

With the RX1R III, Sony appears to have addressed many of those points. Most notably, autofocus has seen a generational leap with the addition of AI-powered subject recognition, and the new 61MP sensor delivers even more resolution than before.

61MP full-frame sensor meets ZEISS glass

At the heart of the RX1R III is a 61-megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor paired with the company’s latest BIONZ XR image processor. The sensor omits the optical low-pass filter and features an anti-reflective coating to maximize resolution, contrast, and dynamic range. This is the same sensor resolution found in Sony’s Alpha 7R V, now in a palm-sized body.

The fixed ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens is optimized at the micron level for this sensor, promising edge-to-edge sharpness and premium optical performance that continues the RX1R legacy.

AI autofocus and step crop versatility

Borrowing from Sony’s Alpha series, the RX1R III integrates a dedicated AI processing unit that enhances autofocus performance. It can recognize and track human and animal eyes, heads, bodies, and even cars, trains, and airplanes. It works reliably even when subjects are partially obscured.

Despite the fixed lens, Sony includes its Step Crop Shooting function, allowing users to toggle between digital focal length equivalents of 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm. These crops can also be adjusted in post when shooting RAW. A macro ring on the lens enables close focusing down to 20 cm, with a maximum magnification of 0.26x.

Creative Looks and video-ready features

The RX1R III includes twelve Creative Looks that apply to both stills and video, including filmic profiles like FL2 for subdued tones and FL3 for punchier, saturated colors. While full video specifications have not been disclosed, the inclusion of these profiles suggests Sony is targeting hybrid creators as well.

Compact design, refined usability

The magnesium alloy body features a streamlined top plate with recessed dials and a flat surface. The updated grip and body texture aim to improve handheld stability, while the integrated 2.36-million-dot XGA OLED EVF offers 0.70x magnification.

Battery life is rated for up to 300 shots (270 using the EVF), powered by the NP-FW50 battery. A USB Type-C port supports USB PD fast charging and allows extended use with external battery packs.

Sustainability and accessibility

In line with Sony’s “Road to Zero” sustainability initiative, the RX1R III is produced in facilities powered by 100% renewable energy. Its packaging uses Sony’s proprietary Original Blended Material, made from bamboo, sugarcane fibers, and recycled paper. The camera also includes a screen reader and menu magnification functions to improve accessibility for visually impaired users.

Accessories designed for the RX1R III

Sony is launching dedicated accessories alongside the camera:

  • TG-2 Thumb Grip – $299.99 USD
  • LCS-RXL Body Case – $249.99 USD
  • LHP-1 Lens Hood – $199.99 USD

Each accessory is designed for both form and function, offering full port access and premium finishes that match the RX1R III’s aesthetics.

Pricing and availability

The Sony RX1R III will be available in July 2025 at a retail price of $5,099.99 USD. Accessories will follow in August 2025.

The RX1R II carved out a cult following among street and travel photographers. Does the RX1R III’s combination of AI autofocus, 61MP resolution, and crop flexibility win you over? Let us know what you think in the comments.
