Tiffen Filters with ARRI Magnetic Rear Filter Holder Mount for ARRI Signature Lenses Released

Tiffen recently launched a new lineup of filters for ARRI Signature lenses that feature the ARRI Magnetic Rear Filter Holder mount. The entire library of Tiffen Filters will be available with that new mount, including the well-known Black/Night Fog, Black Pro-Mist, Glimmerglass, and so on. So let’s take a closer look at this filter mount system and all the Tiffen Filters!

American manufacturer Tiffen has been producing photo/video filters since 1938, and their solid reputation for quality products is solid amongst filmmakers worldwide. The company makes a wide range of filters, including UV, ND, polarizers, color correction, and special effects filters in all industry-standard sizes and shapes.

The ARRI Signature Primes were launched in 2018 alongside the ALEXA LF. These incredible pieces of glass quickly became a go-to rental set of prime lenses for shooting high-end content with a large-format cinema camera. The ARRI Signature Primes range from 12mm to 280mm, all at T1.8 (except for the 200mm T2.5 and 280mm T2.8), and feature an LPL lens mount. Also, four Signature Zoom lenses are available, including the 16-32mm, 24-75mm, 45-135mm, and 65-300mm, all with a constant T2.8 aperture.

Earlier this year, ARRI launched the Impression V Filters that magnetically attach at the back of their Signature lenses. Tiffen is now joining the ARRI Magnetic Rear Filter Holder mount ecosystem by launching nearly all its Diffusion Filters catalog in that mount.

ARRI Magnetic Rear Filter Holder mount

The ARRI Magnetic Rear Filter Holder mount consists of twelve high-power magnets at the back of each lens. The filters attach magnetically at the back of the lenses without any tools.

A rear filter affects your image differently compared to a front image filter. Indeed, the absence of diffusion and effects filters significantly affects the way the filter’s intensity interacts with your image. As Jon Fauer ASC explains:

When mounted on the rear, you can use one filter strength, for example ¼, on your entire range of focal lengths. You do not have to change strengths depending on how wide or tight you are. This is different from when you add a filter to the front of the lens—where you probably use a heavier grade for wide angles (maybe ½ or 1) and a lighter grade for tighter angles (maybe ⅛ or ¼). Now, you only need one filter strength at the rear of each lens in a set.
