Tilta Canon EOS C400 Cage Announced – New Power Distribution System

At IBC 2024, we caught up with Jack from Tilta to talk about their new cage for the Canon EOS C400. One of the key features is the method of power distribution and an adjustable PD plate, which supports both V-mount and Gold mount batteries. We also explored how the cage performs when the camera is used in a shoulder-mounted setup.

Jack explained that the key feature of the EOS C400 cage is its power distribution. Tilta designed a new PD plate that supports both V-mount and Gold mount batteries. Because the plate is adjustable, users can hot-swap internal batteries in the EOS C400, which can be of different sizes. This means there is a PD passthrough – two PD Outs and a PD In, so the C400 can be run off another external battery if needed.

Mounting options

One reason for using a cage is to improve handling when carrying a camera on your shoulder, so we asked Jack about setups for this purpose. He explained that their LWS (Lightweight Support System) features a triple baseplate. There is an in-built shoulder rig and a removable VCT plate that can be swapped out to fit a Manfrotto standard. This provides a wide range of mounting options for different systems. Additionally, the back of the baseplate has a NATO rail, similar to what’s found on Tilta’s lightweight shoulder rig, so you can interchange the backplate from the lightweight shoulder rig and put it on the EOS C400 cage.

Attaching accessories to the Tilta Canon EOS C400 cage

For camera support, the LWS baseplate has two rosettes on each side, making it fully modular and compatible with various handles, including extendable options. Tilta also offers a selection of rods that allow handlebars to be attached.

When asked about mounting accessories like an EVF and microphones, Jack explained that the cage includes a top plate similar to the one for the V-Raptor. It features a 15mm cross-through bar, which allows for the attachment of a Canon EVF as well as an external shotgun microphone. Jack also mentioned that the top plate is designed in two parts, allowing the original EOS C400 handle to be used by removing one section and replacing it with the handle.

Price and availability

The C400 camera cage is available in a Base Kit for $199 ($179 until October 7th), and the Battery Plate is $139. Shipping is in 4-6 weeks for V-Mount, and Gold Mount will be available shortly thereafter. For more information, please visit the Tilta website.
