TLS Rehoused FUJI EBC Lenses Announced - Premium Compact Cine Primes

British lens manufacturer and rehousing specialist True Lens Services has just announced a new set of rehoused lenses: the TLS FUJI EBC. This set of lenses consists of eight focal lengths: 19 / 24 / 28 / 35 / 50 / 100 / 135mm, as well as a newly developed and unique 70mm T2 lens. With a pricetag of $77,000, this set of lenses is primarily aimed at rental houses, but let’s take a closer look at it!

True Lens Services – also called TLS – is a UK-based company that specializes in the design, manufacture, and servicing/maintenance of professional cine lenses. Furthermore, the company is well-known for their rehousing services. If you’re new to lens rehousing, it involves taking still photography or cinema lenses, typically vintage models, and modifying them for use in modern cinema production with a new housing, focus and iris gear rings, improved mechanics, and the implementation of a PL lens mount.

TLS already offers lens rehousing for various lenses, including Canon K35, Leica R, Zeiss Contax, and many more. The company is now back with their first rehousing project for FUJI lenses, starting with the legendary EBC lenses.

FUJINON EBC lenses

FUJIFILM introduced the FUJINON EBC (Electron Beam Coated) lenses in the early 1970s. In 1971, the EBC coating technology made its debut, initially applied to FUJINON lenses for Fujica cameras. The most popular lenses were the EBC FUJINON 50mm f/1.4, the EBC FUJINON 55mm f/1.8, and the EBC FUJINON 35mm f/2.8. All of these lenses originally had an M42 screw mount and were later available for Fujica X-Mount SLRs.

The FUJINON EBC lenses offer excellent low-light performance and a naturally shallow depth of field. According to TLS, “the lenses exhibit gentle softening toward the corners and produce striking, cinematic flares—characteristics highly sought after by filmmakers in search of a vintage aesthetic.”

TLS FUJI EBC Rehoused Lenses – features

True Lens Services is bringing those legendary lenses back to their full glory with a full rehousing and re-engineering. The lens set consists of eight focal lengths: 19mm T3.8, 24mm T2.9, 28mm/35mm at T2.1, 50mm T1.4, 70mm T2.2, 100mm T2.9, and 135mm T2.7.

All lenses feature a PL mount, have a front filter diameter of 110mm for matte boxes, and are equipped with 0.8mod gears on the focus and aperture rings. Since all lenses have different sizes, weights, and minimum focus distances, the following is a complete list of specifications for the lenses.

As the original FUJINON EBC lens set didn’t offer an option between 50mm and 100mm, TLS developed a new 70mm T2.2 lens, crafted using the 50mm f/1.4 EBC as a foundation with supplementary optics.

According to TLS, “every lens in the updated EBC series has been carefully rehoused to ensure it meets the highest cinema standards. Housings feature industry-leading mechanical precision, including the integration of floating elements on a variable cam system, preserving optimal optical performance while maintaining a consistent tactile experience across all focal lengths.”
