Vision Research Phantom T2110 Introduced – High-Speed Camera Records at 483,300 fps

Vision Research has introduced a new high-speed camera, the Phantom T2110, which can record up to a jaw-dropping 483,300 fps. But it comes at a cost to the resolution. The camera features a 12-bit 1200 x 800 BSI sensor and can shoot up to 21,000 fps at full resolution. Let’s dive in!

Phantom cameras have become synonymous with ultra-high-speed imaging and are widely used in applications ranging from scientific research to filmmaking. Vision Research introduced the Phantom VEO 610 and Phantom S991 in 2022. The Phantom Flex 4K and Phantom HD Gold were used in such films as Inception, Guardians of the Galaxy, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and others.

Phantom T2110 high-speed camera – features

The new Phantom T2110 from Vision Research features a 12-bit 1200 x 800 BSI (back side illuminated) sensor and can film up to 21,000 fps at full resolution. When you start pushing the higher frame rates, the resolution drops. For example, when filming at the max frame rate of 483,300 fps (with the Binning Mode), the resolution falls all the way down to 640 x 64. Using the Standard Mode, the resolution is 1280 x 32.

The image throughput is 21 gigapixels per second (Gpx/s), with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 40 dB, improved low-light performance, and several sensor configuration options. These modes include color, monochrome, and ultraviolet-extended. Quantum efficiencies (photon to electron conversion) include 84.3% mono (QExFF), 83% binned, and 77% color. The binned mode only supports mono.

The Phantom T2110’s full list of features includes the following:

• 12-bit 1200 x 800 BSI sensor (23.7mm x 14.8mm), 18.5 µm pixels or 37 µm (binned).
• 40 dB signal-to-noise ratio.
• Dynamic range: 56.55 dB (binned), 52.15 dB (standard).
• Quantum efficiency of 84.3% mono, 83% binned, and 77% color.
• Up to 21,000 fps at full resolution (1200 x 800).
• Up to 483,300 fps at 640 x 64 resolution via Binning Mode, while in Standard Mode, the resolution is at 1280 x 32.
• Minimum frame rate is 100 fps.
• Color, Monochrome, or UV-extended options.
• Exposure: 1.1 µs minimum exposure standard, 190ns minimum exposure with FAST option (export controlled) Global electronic shutter Extreme Dynamic Range (EDR) Auto Exposure Exposure Index (E.I.) Shutter Off mode for PIV.
• Extreme Dynamic Range (EDR) dynamically adjusts exposure in saturated image areas.
• Programmable I/O, allowing for assigning and modifying the hardware signal interface for advanced synchronization.
• Interface with data acquisition (DAQ) systems, which can be recorded and viewed as metadata in Cine files. Supports other measurement sensors.
• Optional fully automated workflow via image-based auto-trigger (IBAT) combined with multi-Cine partitions and continuous recording in PCC.
• Power: 100 – 240 VAC, 280-watt power supply included. 20 – 28 VDC secondary power input on the back panel
• Records in Phantom Cine RAW, Cine Compressed, Apple ProRes, H.264 MP4, and others. Supports JPEG, RAW, TIFF, DNG, and other still image formats.
• Compatible with the CineMag5.
• RAM options of 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB, or 256 GB and up to 63 memory partitions. It can record up to 8 seconds of footage at max frame rate with the 256 GB RAM option.
• MicroHDMI and 2x 3G HD-SDI output. Supports up to 1080p60. 10GB Ethernet.
• Nikon F-mount (F and G Nikon SLR lenses), but also supports Canon EF, PL, M42, and C with optional mount.
