Your iPhone 17 Pro's Best Cameras, Now for Selfies: Dockcase Selfix Adds Rear AMOLED Touchscreen

Dockcase has launched the Selfix, a protective case for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max that integrates a 1.6-inch circular AMOLED touchscreen on the back of the phone, allowing users to take selfies and frame video using the full 48MP rear camera system. The case also adds a microSD card slot supporting up to 2TB, a feature iPhones have never natively offered.

The concept behind the Selfix is straightforward: the front-facing camera on the iPhone 17 Pro shoots at 18MP, while the rear camera system offers three 48MP sensors with significantly better low-light performance, optical zoom up to 8x, and access to features like Night Mode and Portrait Mode. By adding a small viewfinder to the back of the phone, the Selfix lets content creators and everyday users harness the full power of those rear cameras for self-facing shots. This is Dockcase’s 16th Kickstarter campaign, and the project has already surpassed its funding goal. Dockcase is better known in the tech accessory space for its smart USB-C hubs and SSD enclosures, and the company operates under the brand name Seesaw on Kickstarter.

How it works

The Selfix connects to the iPhone via the USB-C port using DisplayPort Alt Mode, which mirrors the rear camera feed to the built-in 1.6-inch AMOLED display at 480 x 480 pixel resolution. The workflow is simple: press the dedicated Selfix button to activate the rear screen and camera, frame yourself on the circular touchscreen, and shoot. No additional app is required. According to hands-on reports from TechRadar, the system works as described with minimal lag, though users will need to enable AssistiveTouch in the iPhone’s Accessibility settings since the case is treated as an adaptive accessory.

For filmmakers and content creators who already use the iPhone 17 Pro as a production tool, the Selfix addresses a specific pain point: framing self-shot content with the superior rear camera system. Vloggers, run-and-gun documentarians, and social media creators have long resorted to small mirrors or guesswork when trying to use the main camera for pieces to camera. The Selfix provides a proper live viewfinder for that scenario, with access to the full range of rear lenses from 0.5x ultra-wide to 8x telephoto.

Expandable storage for iPhone

Beyond the selfie functionality, the integrated microSD card slot is arguably the more universally useful feature. The slot supports cards up to 2TB (UHS-I, Class 10, U3, V30 standards) and works with Apple’s native Files app for drag-and-drop file transfers. This is particularly relevant for video shooters who regularly fill up their iPhone storage with 4K footage. A 2TB microSD card currently costs around $188, compared to the $800+ premium Apple charges for upgrading from 256GB to 2TB of internal storage at the point of purchase.

There is an important limitation to note, however. The microSD slot supports UHS-I speeds only (theoretical max of 104MB/s), and the native Camera app only supports direct ProRes recording to external storage that meets a minimum speed threshold of 220MB/s. This means you cannot record ProRes directly to the microSD card. The expandable storage is designed for backup and file management rather than real-time recording, which is a distinction content creators should keep in mind. For those who need high-speed external recording, the Blackmagic Camera ProDock with its USB-C SSD connectivity remains the go-to solution.

Specifications and design

The case is made from high-quality TPU and adds considerable bulk to the phone, approximately doubling its thickness. Dimensions come in at 169 x 81 x 17mm for the iPhone 17 Pro Max version and 156 x 76 x 17mm for the iPhone 17 Pro. A dedicated mechanical power button controls the rear screen on and off to preserve battery life, since the Selfix draws power from the iPhone itself and does not contain a built-in battery.

Power delivery is handled via USB-C with PD 3.0 support, accepting up to 45W input so you can charge your iPhone through the case. A built-in magnetic alignment ring is designed to MagSafe specifications, meaning physical MagSafe accessories like grips, mounts, and ring holders will attach securely. However, wireless charging is not supported; the added thickness of the rear screen pushes the phone beyond MagSafe’s minimum distance requirement for charging.

The Selfix is available in three color options: Satin White, Morganite Pink, and Onyx Black.

A niche tool for content creators?

For professional filmmakers who have invested in the iPhone 17 Pro ecosystem with accessories like the Blackmagic Camera ProDock or dedicated cages and rigs, the Selfix occupies a different space entirely. It is not a production tool in the traditional sense. Rather, it fills a gap for solo creators, vloggers, and social media shooters who want the best possible image quality from self-facing shots without the complexity or cost of a full rig with an external monitor.

The trade-offs are real: the case is thick, wireless charging is gone, and the microSD slot is too slow for direct video recording. Early hands-on impressions suggest the product works as advertised, but its utility will depend heavily on how frequently a given user actually needs rear-camera selfies or video framing. The expandable storage, on the other hand, could appeal to a much wider audience of iPhone shooters who simply want more space for their files.

Pricing and availability

The Selfix is available now on Kickstarter with several pledge tiers. The Super Early Bird price for the case alone is $79 (MSRP $129), representing a 39% discount. The Early Bird tier is priced at $89. A Selfix Kit bundle, which includes the case, an adjustable crossbody strap, and a magnetic ring holder with mirror, is available for $109 (MSRP $187). Available add-ons include the magnetic ring holder at $15, the crossbody strap at $25, and a 512GB microSD card at $109. Shipping to the US, EU, and UK is included with no additional customs charges, and delivery is expected in May 2026. A one-year warranty and lifetime customer support are included.

We received a working unit to check out at CineD HQ, and I will show it on next week’s Focus Check podcast, in case you are interested in seeing it in action.

Crowdfunding disclaimer

At the end of every crowdfunding-related article, we remind you to be aware of the risks when backing a project on a crowdfunding platform. Also, please read the platform’s use and remember there can be significant delays when delivering the product. Some projects don’t get delivered at all.

Would you use a rear-screen selfie case for your content creation workflow, or does the added bulk make it a non-starter? And is the microSD storage expansion more appealing to you than the selfie feature itself? Don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments below!
