Strada Direct Camera-to-Editor File Transfer Tested – Eliminating Cloud Dependency for Remote Post-Production

Strada is continuing to push the envelope, testing their Strada Agent. This time, Michael Cioni and his team are trying a new workflow enabling direct camera-to-editor file delivery without traditional cloud infrastructure. Let’s take a closer look.

We have been following the journey of Strada to come up with something extremely useful for the filmmaking community. The last time we spoke to Michael was at Cine Gear 2025, where he was kind enough to demonstrate how Strada is revolutionizing peer-to-peer file transfer by eliminating traditional cloud storage limitations for video professionals.

And now, Michael, Peter, Austin, and the entire Strada team are working to prove that their groundbreaking file transfer system is challenging conventional post-production workflows by enabling direct peer-to-peer file delivery from camera to editor, eliminating the need for cloud-based storage and dramatically reducing turnaround times. Are we witnessing the future of file transfer? In my view, yes! Hopefully, additional camera manufacturers will join this movement, so it will be even easier to go from filming to editing to a rough cut. The technology behind the revolution

The workflow centers around the Strada agent, a peer-to-peer network system that connects cameras and computers directly without requiring cloud intermediaries. During a recent test shoot featuring Los Angeles-based artist Eli Coccetti, the system successfully delivered files from multiple camera setups to a remote editor working from his home studio.

The test involved two distinct camera configurations:

  • Interview setup: Two RED Raptor XL cameras shooting 8K raw with simultaneous 1080p ProRes proxy recording
  • B-roll setup: Blackmagic Ursa Cine 12K camera with native H.264 proxy generation

RED V-Raptor XL workflow breakdown

Stage 1: Proxy Optimization. DIT Urban Olsson extracted ProRes proxy files from the RED cameras immediately after the 23-minute interview. Despite the lengthy recording time, each proxy file measured only 7GB and transferred to his workstation in approximately five seconds. To optimize for web transfer over the location’s sub-30Mbps internet connection, the files were processed through DaVinci Resolve with H.265 compression at a 4Mbps bitrate.

Running on an Apple Mac Studio M2 Ultra, Resolve rendered 46 minutes of material in just two minutes, compressing the files to 1GB each.

Stage 2: Direct Transfer. Using Strada’s agent software running on both the DIT station and editor DeAndrΓ© Vidale’s remote Mac Studio, files were pushed directly between hard drives without intermediate cloud storage. The system enabled Urban, the DIT, to navigate DeAndrΓ©, the editor, authorized folder structure, and transfer video files, audio WAV files, and even music to specific directories.

Blackmagic integration: camera-direct workflow

The most impressive demonstration involved the Blackmagic camera’s SMB (Server Message Block) sharing capability. The camera was mounted as a network drive on Urban’s DIT cart, which was then shared through the Strada network directly to the editor.

This configuration enabled:

  • Real-time access to camera media without card ejection
  • Direct file transfer from the camera to the editor’s drive
  • Continuous B-roll delivery throughout the shoot day

The Blackmagic’s native H.264 proxies at 10Mbps proved ideal for web transfer without additional compression, maintaining adequate quality for editorial work while preserving timecode and clip name matching for later raw file relinking.

Real-world performance

The workflow delivered unprecedented efficiency metrics:

  • File accessibility: Editor could begin cutting within minutes of wrap
  • Multiple cuts: Three rough cuts were completed and reviewed during the shoot day
  • Zero downtime: Continuous B-roll delivery eliminated traditional batch transfer delays
  • Bandwidth efficiency: The entire workflow operated on a less than 30Mbps connection

Peet-to-peer instead of cloud – the future?

This peer-to-peer approach fundamentally challenges cloud-dependent workflows that have dominated remote collaboration. By eliminating upload/download cycles and enabling direct computer-to-computer transfers, the system promises to reshape how distributed teams handle time-sensitive projects.

The workflow particularly benefits productions requiring rapid turnaround, remote collaboration, and those operating in bandwidth-constrained environments where traditional cloud solutions prove inadequate.

The developers are actively seeking feedback from the filmmaking community to explore additional workflow applications and integrations with emerging camera technologies.

Currently, the Strada team is working on refining the “access and share media” service, and users can test it in beta with unlimited use. However, the beta will end soon, and users will have to choose a plan. Free will always be available with up to 15GB of transfers per month at no cost.
