Last week, Luma AI launched Ray3, a generative video model positioned as a creative partner that can “reason” through prompts and deliver native HDR video in ACES2065-1 EXR across 10-, 12-, and 16-bit formats. The model is live on Luma’s Dream Machine and inside Adobe’s Firefly app, targeting filmmakers, advertisers, and game developers who need production-grade outputs. Let’s dive into Luma AI Ray3.
Ray3 moves beyond one-shot prompt interpretation by evaluating its own outputs and refining results during generation. Luma frames this as a shift from slot-machine-style randomness to instruction following and temporal coherence that keeps characters, motion, and physics consistent over time.
Ray3 introduces a multimodal reasoning system designed for creative tasks. The model can plan scenes, follow annotated directions, and judge whether its results match user intent, which helps maintain narrative continuity and physical plausibility across shots.
At the format level, Ray3 is the first model that generates video as true HDR in professional ACES2065-1 EXR, supporting 10-, 12-, and 16-bit pipelines commonly used in high-end finishing. Luma adds native 1080p generation and a neural upscaler to 4K to meet broadcast and studio requirements.
Because Ray3 writes directly to ACES2065-1 EXR at up to 16-bit precision, colorists gain access to deeper highlight and shadow detail, plus robust round-tripping through grading and VFX. Luma also notes that SDR material, whether camera-captured or AI-generated, can be converted into generative HDR for expanded grading latitude.
A new Draft Mode accelerates ideation by producing test videos up to 10× faster, then preserving identity, motion, and composition when promoting drafts to final high-quality renders. Ray3 also brings upgraded creative tools: Image-to-Video animation, Keyframes for timing and transitions, Extend to lengthen takes, and Loop for seamless repeats.
CNET reports practical timings during testing: draft shots can render in roughly 20 seconds, with upscale to high-fidelity outputs taking about 2 to 5 minutes.
Adobe is the first partner to ship Ray3 outside of Luma AI’s Dream Machine. Ray3 appears in Firefly’s Video module and Firefly Boards, with content syncing to Creative Cloud for finishing in Premiere Pro. Adobe says all Firefly generations carry Content Credentials, and assets created in Firefly are not used to train generative models. As a launch offer, paid Firefly and Creative Cloud Pro customers get unlimited Ray3 generations for the first 14 days.
Beyond independent creators and studios, launch partners include Dentsu Digital in Japan and HUMAIN Create in the MENA region, plus agencies like Monks, Galeria, and Strawberry Frog, indicating a push into scaled advertising and branded content.
Despite the technical progress, quite understandably many industry professionals remain skeptical about generative AI video. Concerns range from originality and copyright questions to the potential erosion of traditional craft. As we continue to report about AI innovations that are already affecting our craft, members of the CineD audience have also voiced reservations about the authenticity and cinematic value of AI-driven imagery. Yet, with platforms like Adobe Firefly now integrating models such as Ray3 into everyday creative tools, it is increasingly clear that professional filmmakers will need to familiarize themselves with these systems. Understanding how to leverage or critically assess AI video is becoming an essential part of staying relevant in a rapidly shifting production landscape.
Luma AI Ray3 is available now on Luma’s Dream Machine platform and within Adobe Firefly. Adobe notes that, for the first two weeks from September 18, 2025, Ray3 access is limited to Firefly and Dream Machine.
Ray3’s combination of reasoning, ACES EXR HDR, and Adobe integration points to a more controllable, pipeline-ready era for AI video.
