Godox KNOWLED MG4KR Announced – Full-Color 4K HMI Alternative

Godox is introducing a massive, full-color COB light, the Godox KNOWLED MG4KR, that cranks out an impressive amount of illumination. The fixture is claimed to produce 225,100 lux @ 3 m when used with the MGR20, their 20° reflector. This puts it in the same class as a 4K HMI fixture but with the added benefits of delivering 91% Rec.2020 coverage and IP65-rated weather resistance. You can use these lights to simulate sunlight and not worry if it is raining outside. Let’s see what these lights are all about and what productions might use them.

Godox is on a roll lately, putting out some very interesting lighting fixtures. The Shenzhen-based company started out making photography flashes, but over the past few years, they have become known for affordable LED video lighting. They offer filmmakers an attractive alternative to similar lights from Aputure, Nanlite, Litepanels, and even Arri (in some respects).

Godox KNOWLED MG4KR Overview

The MG4KR takes what the MG4K did well and adds a full-color engine with a wide 1800 to 10,000 K CCT range, green and magenta shift, and coverage of 91% Rec.2020. You get the punch of a daylight COB while still having the flexibility to match practicals or build colorful looks when you need them.

Godox also updated the cooling system for better long-term stability, and the fixture stays compatible with the G-Mount ecosystem so any modifiers you already have continue to work.

A Practical 4K HMI Alternative?

The thing that really stands out about the MG4KR is how practical it feels to use. The IP65 weather resistance alone is huge. I have rented expensive HMI lights in the past and got nervous every time a dark cloud rolled past. Playing dodgeball with the sky when you’re working on a tight schedule is never fun, so having a weather-resistant light like this removes a lot of that panic. It also gives you a very believable “fake sun” without hauling around a bulky HMI lamp head and one of those giant, back-breaking ballasts.

Control is flexible and simple. The fixture works with the Godox KNOWLED App for CRMX setups, or you can use the regular Godox Light App for quick Bluetooth and NFC pairing. Either way, it is fast to get going.

High-speed mode is also great to have since it keeps the light flicker-free for tabletop work, product shots, or anything you are shooting at higher frame rates.

And yes, the MG4KR is absolutely a big light. The head alone is 50.7 lb (23 kg), and the power and controller unit is another similarly sized chunk, so it is significantly larger and heavier than a typical LED COB fixture. It is closer to the footprint of a large HMI head than something like an Aputure 600D or Nanlite 1200.

The MG4KR fits all kinds of jobs. It is bright enough for exterior work, but you can just as easily use it on indie films, commercials, product shoots, or virtual production stages. Anything that once required a 4K HMI or a stack of bi-color LEDs becomes more manageable with this one fixture.

Price and Availability

The Godox KNOWLED MG4KR is available for preorder now, with pricing set at $6,199.00 for the fixture on its own. The version that includes the flight case is $6,299.00, which is surprisingly affordable considering how expensive custom cases usually are. Both versions are listed through major retailers, including B&H, and should begin shipping once stock arrives.

Final Thoughts

I’ve always liked Godox as a brand, but in prior years, taking their fixtures on bigger shoots made me a little self-conscious with a touch of imposter syndrome. For the price, I could tell that their equipment was very respectable, but other professionals were sporting Arri and Aputure lights. On more than a couple of occasions, I left my Godox fixtures at home so my clients wouldn’t think of me as an amateur. I don’t think that is the case anymore.

Godox continues its push into high-end LED lighting with fixtures that feel designed for real working sets. The Godox KNOWLED MG4KR offers serious output, full-color control, app integration, and a durable IP65 design that finally lets you stop worrying about rain. For anyone who wants a powerful all-in-one RGB light that can stand in for a 4K HMI, this looks like a very tempting option.
