The Canon EOS C50 - Now Netflix Approved

Netflix has recently approved the Canon EOS C50, which is Canon’s latest hybrid cinema camera, for capturing footage intended for airplay on its platform. So if you want to learn more about the recommended shooting settings to get the most out of the camera, let’s dive into it!

After the Blackmagic Design URSA Cine 17K 65 and the Canon EOS C80, Netflix approved yet another Canon cinema camera for shooting documentary, interview, reality TV, and feature film content for their platform: the Canon EOS C50.

The EOS C50 was released in September 2025, and, in a nutshell, it features a 7K full-frame CMOS image sensor, which can record internally in 7K60P in 12-bit Cinema RAW Light, as well as 4K120P and 2K180P. The camera has an 800/6400 Dual Base ISO, in Canon Log 2/Canon Log 3/RAW recording modes. Last but not least, the EOS C50 features an Open Gate recording mode that uses the entire area of the full-frame 3:2 image sensor, capturing the full width and height of the sensor (6960 x 4640). Open Gate recording is only available for Cinema RAW Light / XF HEVC S recording, with a maximum frame rate of 30P.

Canon EOS C50 – Netflix approved

As usual, when Netflix approves a camera for its productions, the company publishes an entire camera production guide. Below are the recommended settings for the Canon EOS C50:

  • Picture profile: For all sensor modes, frame rates, and recording formats, Netflix recommends Canon Log 2 to get the most out of your EOS C50’s image sensor. Canon Log 3 can also be used as an alternative, as long as you are aware of the one or two stop loss in the shadows trade-off.
  • ISO: You can use either 800 or 6400, which are the camera’s base ISO.
  • Black Balance: Perform Auto Black Balance at the start of the day and after any dramatic change in operational temperature.
  • RAW Recording: Full-frame 3:2 or Full-frame sensor mode, RAW HQ/ST recording format.
  • Compressed recording: Full-frame sensor mode, in XF-AVC YCC422 10-bit recording format, in DCI 4K or 4K UHD resolution.

To me, this EOS C50 approval is a nice addition for any production looking for a compact C-Cam or crash cam that’s easy to hide inside a moving vehicle, or for a reality show looking to hide multiple cameras all around its set without drawing much attention.

Is “Netflix approved” something you look at when purchasing a new camera? Did you switch to the Canon EOS C50? If so, how do you like it? Don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments down below!
