Aputure Flagship LS 1200d Pro Announced - High Output Daylight LED COB Fixture

We’re seeing a friendly arms race in the competition to replace HMI high output lighting with LED fixtures with Aputure announcing their Light Storm 1200d Pro today at Cine Gear 2021 hot on the heels of the recent Evoke 1200 launch from manufacturer Nanlux. This type of competition can only benefit filmmakers as the cost per lumen ratio steadily creeps lower. Details of the new Light Storm 1200d Pro can be found below:

Though the full CineD team is unfortunately unable to cover Cine Gear in-person due to pandemic related travel restrictions, there’s already been some interesting lighting related news from the industry trade show in the form of the 1200d Pro. A new LS 600X and larger Nova P600c have all been announced ahead of the new flagship Light Storm 1200d Pro during a busy Summer and early Autumn for lighting manufacturer Aputure.

Aputure makes a big early claim in their marketing materials for the Light Storm 1200d Pro calling it the “highest output Bowens Mount light fixture on the market”. This makes sense given that the Evoke 1200 uses a custom mounting system called “NL-Mount” due to the COB being “nearly as large as a Bowens mount” according to the Nanlux team.

Interestingly the 5600K balanced 1200d Pro ships with three different reflectors traveling in a separate case optimized for wide, medium and narrow beams — a departure from past Aputure products and something that feels akin to a glass lens accessory on Joker HMI fixtures. Another standout feature is the addition of two DC IN 48V ports (see image below) to allow for half or full battery power operation (though this will likely require a large amount of expensive batteries and might be best achieved with a block-style battery).

Aputure is also promising an eyeball melting 83,100 lux at 3 meters with the narrow reflector attachment in use on the 1200d Pro. It’s also great to see Aputure include a longer head cable (7.5 meters) as standard when compared with past releases.
