Blackmagic Design has released Blackmagic Camera 10.0, a firmware update bringing extended pre-record capabilities of up to 10 minutes and 4-channel audio recording to the URSA Broadcast G2, PYXIS 6K, and PYXIS 12K cameras.

The headline feature of this update is the dramatically expanded pre-record function, which allows these cameras to continuously cache footage to media before the record button is pressed. Users can select pre-record durations ranging from 5 seconds to a full 10 minutes, with that cached material automatically added to the beginning of each recorded file. For documentary crews, news shooters, and live event operators, this ensures unexpected moments are captured even when they occur before a formal record start.

Pre-record for unpredictable environments

The pre-record feature works by continuously writing to the media card in the background. When the user presses record, the camera preserves the selected duration of previously cached footage and appends it to the start of the new clip. Despite the continuous recording happening behind the scenes, only the portion immediately before the record button press is saved, which helps reduce overall storage consumption compared to simply rolling continuously.

This capability is particularly valuable in fast-moving production environments. Whether covering breaking news, wildlife, sports, or documentary subjects, operators can now react to events as they unfold without worrying about missing the critical opening seconds of an action. The ability to choose anywhere from 5 seconds to 10 minutes gives crews flexibility to match pre-record duration to the pace of their specific shooting scenario.

4-channel audio recording

Blackmagic Camera 10.0 also introduces 4-channel audio recording on the URSA Broadcast G2, PYXIS 6K, and PYXIS 12K (we just published our long-awaited Lab Test of this camera, in case you missed it). This doubles the previously available audio channel count, allowing users to record two additional channels directly within the video file. Interview setups, live events, and documentary productions often require separate tracks for talent, ambient sound, or scratch audio, and having four channels available internally simplifies acquisition without relying on external recorders.

All four channels remain perfectly synced with the video file, streamlining postproduction workflows. For broadcast environments where quick turnaround is essential, this eliminates the need for manual audio syncing during editorial.

Additional improvements

Beyond the major additions, the update includes new Camera Control REST API commands for the URSA Broadcast G2 and PYXIS models, expanding remote control and integration possibilities for broadcast and studio setups. Improved Blackmagic Cloud functionality is also part of this release, building on the cloud-based workflows Blackmagic has been developing since Camera 8.5.

For URSA Broadcast G2 users specifically, the update adds improved B4 lens compatibility, addressing a core use case for this camera. The URSA Broadcast G2 was designed with traditional broadcast workflows in mind, and enhanced B4 lens support strengthens its position as a versatile studio and field camera.

Pricing and availability

Blackmagic Camera 10.0 is available now as a free download from the Blackmagic Design support page. As with previous updates, users should export presets and LUTs before updating, as these may be reset during the installation process.
