Blackmagic Design has just released version 2.2 of its Blackmagic Camera app for Android, bringing a number of notable enhancements that continue to close the gap between mobile and professional filmmaking workflows. The update introduces support for Blackmagic Cloud Folders, the new APV (Advanced Professional Video) codec on Android 16, and several UI and stability improvements.

Originally launched for iOS and later made available for Android, the Blackmagic Camera app is designed to transform smartphones into viable filmmaking tools. It offers a user interface and feature set that mirrors the experience of Blackmagic’s professional URSA and Pocket Cinema Camera lines, enabling filmmakers to capture high-quality video while leveraging the power and portability of mobile devices.

The app supports manual control over settings like frame rate, shutter angle, white balance, and ISO. It also allows for recording in professional file formats, including ProRes on iOS and, more recently, Blackmagic’s proprietary Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec on compatible Android devices. What’s new in version 2.2 for Android

With version 2.2, Blackmagic is expanding functionality for users running Android 16 and beyond, while improving usability and cloud collaboration features across the board. Here’s what’s included in the update:

• Support for Blackmagic Cloud Folders: This addition makes it easier to sync footage directly to Blackmagic Cloud for real-time collaboration and post-production using DaVinci Resolve. This builds on the existing integration with Blackmagic Cloud Projects.
• Support for Android 16: The app is now fully compatible with the latest Android release, ensuring continued access to system-level improvements and features.
• Support for APV Codec on Android 16: Devices running Android 16 and equipped with supported hardware can now record using the APV codec. This format, introduced by Blackmagic for high-efficiency, high-quality video capture, is optimized for post-production in DaVinci Resolve.
• Cloud Account Deletion: Users now have the ability to delete their Blackmagic Cloud accounts directly from within the app, giving them more control over their data and cloud presence.
• Histogram Pop-up: A new on-screen histogram pop-up allows for more precise exposure monitoring during recording.
• Optional Photo Library Permission: The app now offers more granular control over permissions, allowing users to opt out of granting access to the device’s photo library.
• UI Adjustments and Bug Fixes: The interface has been refined to better accommodate various screen sizes, and several bugs have been squashed to improve overall stability and performance.
