Blackmagic PYXIS 12K Recall – Early Production Units Get Free Sensor Board Upgrade

Blackmagic Design has issued a voluntary recall of all Blackmagic PYXIS 12K cameras manufactured before serial number 14221337. The company is offering a free Revision B sensor board upgrade to address image artifacts caused by a component tolerance variation, and the program will remain open for three years.

The recall affects an estimated 10% of cameras that can exhibit visible image artifacts when pushing certain camera settings. The root cause has been traced to a tolerance variation in an electronic component on the original sensor board. What makes the situation more complicated is that some customers who initially reported the issue had their cameras replaced by resellers, only to receive units from the same affected batch, meaning the replacement cameras exhibited the same problem. As a result, Blackmagic Design has determined it cannot guarantee the performance of any PYXIS 12K shipped before serial number 14221337 and has opted for a full recall of those units.

A redesigned sensor board

To resolve the issue, Blackmagic Design has developed a Revision B sensor board for the PYXIS 12K. According to the company, every camera that has been sent to their support offices for repair in recent months has already received this upgraded board automatically. And while only a fraction of cameras display artifacts visible to the eye, Blackmagic Design says its internal testing has shown measurable improvements on every single camera that received the upgrade, not just those exhibiting obvious problems.

This is a noteworthy detail. It suggests the component tolerance issue was present across the entire pre-14221337 production run to varying degrees, and that even cameras appearing to function normally can benefit from the Revision B board. For professionals relying on the PYXIS 12K’s full-frame 12K RGBW sensor for demanding work, that kind of assurance matters.

What PYXIS 12K owners need to know

Cameras built over the last few months already ship with the Revision B sensor board from the factory, so recent buyers should be unaffected. Additionally, Blackmagic Design notes that a number of cameras with serial numbers below the 14221337 threshold were held back at the factory and upgraded to Revision B before being shipped. If you are unsure whether your unit has already been upgraded, the company recommends contacting their support office to confirm.

For owners of affected cameras, the process is straightforward: contact any Blackmagic Design sales office to arrange either a sensor board upgrade or a full camera replacement, whichever is faster. The company has committed to keeping this program running for three years, so there is no immediate rush for owners who may be in the middle of productions or otherwise unable to send their camera in right away.

The PYXIS 12K in context

The Blackmagic PYXIS 12K was announced at NAB 2025 in April and began shipping at a price of $4,995. It brought the full-frame RGBW 12K sensor from the larger URSA Cine 12K LF into the compact, modular PYXIS body, making it one of the most compelling value propositions in the cinema camera market. In our lab test, the camera delivered impressive dynamic range results with 12.8 stops at SNR 2 and 14.2 stops at SNR 1. We also covered the camera in a detailed video interview at NAB, discussing the RGBW sensor’s unique full-sensor readout capabilities across multiple resolutions.

Recalls are never ideal, but Blackmagic Design’s approach here is worth recognizing. The company is being transparent about the scope of the issue, proactive in offering both upgrades and replacements, and generous with a three-year window for owners to take advantage of the program. For a camera at this price point, that level of after-sales support is commendable.
