Canon EOS Firmware Update Announced for Cinema EOS C80, C400 and PTZ Cameras

Canon EOS Firmware Update Announced for Cinema EOS C80, C400 and PTZ Cameras

With the Canon EOS firmware update, Canon continues to elevate their Cinema EOS and PTZ solutions by pushing updates that enhance performance and streamline workflows.

Canon has just announced that forthcoming firmware updates for their Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) and Cinema EOS camera lineups will introduce advanced functionalities and enhanced performance. The PTZ updates, encompassing indoor and outdoor models such as the CR-N700, CR-N500, CR-N300, CR-N100, and CR-X300, augment the auto tracking paid add-on with advanced multi-person tracking, improve live streaming capabilities, support the Multi-Camera Control application, and introduce additional features.

Firmware updates for Cinema EOS cameras, including the EOS C400 and EOS C80, also enhance capabilities and broaden creative control from scripted cinema to live events.

EOS C400 and EOS C80 enhancements

The firmware updates for the EOS C400 and EOS C80 Cinema cameras will enhance the cameras’ performance and usability by incorporating the following features:

The EOS C400 and EOS C80 cameras will support distortion and chromatic aberration correction while playing back Cinema RAW Light clips on camera. This ensures that productions can accurately review takes on-set without the need to transfer the card to a computer first.

The Peripheral Border Display, also known as Display Level 2, will be enhanced to provide a quick visual overview of key information, including sensor mode and resolution, selected recording codec for each card slot, custom picture gamma and colour space, digital image stabilisation status, and tilt and roll degrees of the electronic level.

Both the EOS C400 and EOS C80 cameras will now be capable of outputting CV Protocol to multiple devices, facilitating virtual productions. This enables the utilisation of lens metadata by multiple computers running our CV Metadata Extraction plugin, significantly enhancing usability in virtual set environments.

Furthermore, the cameras will now have an increase in the number of look/LUT files that can be registered, from 20 to 256. Additionally, the cameras will now possess the capability to pause Digital IS during recording.

For the EOS C400 camera, a feature has been introduced that allows users to combine Tracking AF with manual focus control. While Tracking AF is enabled, users can manually adjust focus using the lens focus ring. Once manual focus control is completed, the camera will maintain focus, and Tracking AF will resume automatically.

Canon EOS firmware update – PTZ cameras

Live streaming with Canon PTZ cameras has recently become even more accessible with improved SRT and RTMP support. Both SRT and RTMP now feature auto-reconnect to minimise downtime in the event of a signal loss. SRT improvements also include the automatic commencement of transmission upon camera power-up. For the CR-N100 and CR-N300 cameras, this firmware provides enhanced support for teleconferencing systems with PTZ control over IP when the camera operates in USB Camera Mode.

Other updates to the cameras include novel Area Zoom functionality, which facilitates users in navigating to an area of interest by drawing a box on the user interface. For applications necessitating varying frame rates within the same production, the CR-N700 firmware incorporates the capability to seamlessly emulate the appearance of 60, 30, or 24 frames per second from the user interface or a controller. Future firmware updates will also become more user-friendly, as this firmware introduces the functionality to check, download, and install new firmware via the camera’s web interface.

The built-in auto-tracking application is undergoing enhancements. Tracking performance in both the free and paid versions of auto tracking has been improved to effectively track fast-moving objects. The paid version of auto-tracking will also incorporate multi-subject tracking, enabling simultaneous tracking of multiple subjects. Furthermore, the update includes face orientation composition assistance, which automatically adjusts the shot composition based on the subject’s direction.

The RC-IP1000 controller will receive a firmware update. This update enhances compatibility with the new camera firmware features and auto-tracking updates, as well as improves preset registration and display. Additionally, the firmware adds compatibility with the EOS C80 cinema camera and supports standard protocol over serial ports. It also incorporates numerous other improvements to the controller.

Canon’s Multi-Camera Control IOS Application will also receive an update. This latest update supports all four indoor PTZ cameras and the CR-X300 outdoor camera.

The firmware updates for Canon’s PTZ, Cinema EOS C400, and EOS C80 cameras are currently scheduled to be available by the end of July 2025.
