Canon EOS R8 Mark II Announced – 24.2MP Full-Frame, IBIS, and Oversampled 4K60p

So here it is, the Canon EOS R8 Mark II. Three and a half years after the original EOS R8 shipped as Canon’s lightest full-frame body, its successor finally adds the one thing nearly everyone asked for: in-body image stabilization. It also picks up a joystick, a new angular body design that nods to Canon’s film-era cameras, and a price that has climbed by $400. Let’s look at what actually changed for us video shooters, and what didn’t.

The headline facts first. The EOS R8 Mark II keeps a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and adds a 5-axis in-body image stabilizer that coordinates with lens IS. Video tops out at oversampled 4K up to 59.94p without a crop, and Full HD runs to 179.8p, both in 10-bit 4:2:2 if you want it. Stills shooters get 40 fps with the electronic shutter, pre-continuous shooting that buffers up to 20 frames before the shutter press, and a 2.36-million-dot OLED viewfinder at 0.70x magnification. The body weighs 546g / 19.26 oz with card and battery and measures 131.4 x 90.0 x 79.7mm / 5.17 x 3.54 x 3.14in. Canon calls it the lightest EOS with IBIS, and I have no reason to doubt that. The body alone is $1,899.

Where this camera sits in Canon’s lineup

A bit of context, because Canon’s full-frame range has become crowded in the last twelve months. The EOS R6 Mark III arrived in November 2025 with the 32.5MP sensor from the EOS C50, 7K open gate, and internal RAW. In May, the EOS R6 V took that same sensor, dropped the viewfinder and mechanical shutter, added active cooling, and went after video-first creators at $2,499. The original EOS R8 from February 2023, meanwhile, was essentially the EOS R6 Mark II sensor in a smaller, cheaper, unstabilized body.

The Mark II stays on that older 24.2MP sensor rather than moving to the 32.5MP one. My guess (and it is a guess) is that this is deliberate segmentation: the 7K sensor stays reserved for the R6 Mark III and R6 V, and the R8 Mark II gets a well-proven imaging pipeline plus the stabilizer the first model lacked. Whether that is enough for $1,899 depends heavily on what you shoot, so let me go through the parts that matter.

The stabilizer, and what it cost

Canon says the 5-axis IBIS uses Coordinated Control with optically stabilized RF lenses and adds what it calls Peripheral Coordinated Control to suppress edge blur on wide-angle glass. What Canon did not publish in the press materials we received is a CIPA stop rating for the stabilizer, so I will hold off on any claims about how many stops you get until that number appears somewhere official.

The physical cost of IBIS is visible in the spec sheet. The original R8 weighed 461g with card and battery; the Mark II is 546g, which is 85g / 3 oz heavier. It is also nearly 10mm deeper, at 79.7mm versus 70mm. That is still a small camera, and for anyone who skipped the first R8 purely because handheld footage needed a gimbal, this fix is the whole story. Just do not expect the same featherweight feel as before.

Video keeps the same ceiling with tidier formats

The recording modes will look familiar to anyone who has read our EOS R8 coverage. Oversampled 4K from the full 6K-wide sensor readout, up to 59.94p, and Full HD up to 179.8p, both without a crop. There is no 4K120, no internal RAW, and no open gate; those remain R6 Mark III and R6 V territory. What has changed is the codec naming. The R8 Mark II adopts Canon’s newer XF-HEVC S and XF-AVC S format families, the same structure introduced on the EOS R5 Mark II and used across the recent bodies, so files will slot into the same workflow as the rest of the current lineup.

The bit rates are modest but respectable for a Long GOP-only camera. XF-HEVC S 4:2:2 10-bit records 4K60 at around 225 Mbps and 4K30 at 135 Mbps. XF-AVC S 4:2:2 10-bit at 4K60 hits about 250 Mbps and is the only mode that asks for a V60 card; everything else runs on U3. Full HD at 179.8p in 4:2:2 10-bit sits at 150 Mbps. Canon Log 3 is on board with a minimum of ISO 800 in that gamma, alongside Canon 709, PQ, and HLG presets under the Custom Picture menu, which is Cinema EOS terminology creeping further down the range. The high frame rates use Canon’s Slow and Fast mode and, notably, record audio at up to 180p.

One number I want to flag from the spec sheet: the 4K60 recording time on a single battery is around 40 minutes at 23°C / 73°F. That is a battery figure, not an overheating limit, and Canon has not published thermal limits in the materials we have. The original R8 was rated for roughly two hours of 4K30 and around half an hour of 4K60 before heat became the constraint, and I would want to see how the Mark II behaves with a stabilizer now generating heat inside the same compact shell.

The connectivity question, again

Here is where I have to be blunt, because the spec sheet is clear. There is a single SD slot (UHS-II), and the HDMI output is the micro Type D connector. Johnnie already called micro HDMI outdated in his EOS R6 Mark II first look back in 2022, and it is still here four years later on a camera that Canon positions as a full-frame system entry point. (Canon, if you are reading this: a full-size HDMI and a second card slot would have made this a much easier recommendation.)

The rest of the I/O is fine for the class. USB-C at 10Gbps handles data, charging, and power delivery from the PD-E2 adapter. There is a 3.5mm microphone input, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an E3 remote port, and the 21-pin multi-function shoe that powers accessories like the DM-E1D stereo mic. Wi-Fi moves to Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth is 5.3, and Canon lists live streaming over USB-C, HDMI, or wirelessly through the Camera Connect and Live Switcher Mobile apps.

The battery remains the LP-E17. It keeps the body small and cheap to run, and I understand the logic, but it also means CIPA-rated stills endurance of just 220 shots through the viewfinder in the power-saving mode. Anyone planning a full day of run-and-gun video should budget for a handful of spares or an external USB-C power bank.

Autofocus and stills

Canon claims the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II implementation tracks more tenaciously than the first R8, with people, animal, and vehicle detection plus Register People priority, the feature that prioritizes specific registered faces and that Canon has been pushing across its recent firmware, including the May update round for nine bodies. Low-light AF sensitivity is rated at EV -7.5 for stills and EV -5.5 in 4K, with 100% frame coverage.

On the stills side, the 40 fps electronic shutter burst returns, and Canon quotes a 58% deeper JPEG buffer and 30% deeper RAW buffer than the original R8. The electronic first-curtain shutter is limited to 6 fps and 1/4000s, with flash sync at 1/200s, and there is still no fully mechanical shutter. That is a rolling-shutter sensor, so fast pans and electronic shutter bursts will show the usual skew; how much is something the spec sheet cannot tell us.

A small but interesting addition: the camera can embed distance information into JPEGs, which feeds Canon’s new Dual Pixel 3D Converter, a free Windows application that builds a 3D photo, a background-isolated 3D model, or a short 3D clip from a single frame. It is a stills toy at this stage, but it hints at what Canon can do with the depth data its sensors capture. Details are on Canon’s DP3D page.

The new design and accessories

The R8 Mark II is the first of what Canon describes as a new look, mixing modern ergonomics with a classic camera design language, and the press kit includes a shot of the camera next to a 1980s EOS 650 to make the point. The body picks up a multi-controller joystick, which the original R8 lacked and which matters a lot for moving AF points during video.

Alongside the camera, Canon introduced the EG-E2 Extension Grip, a $99.99 add-on that attaches via a turn-dial to add height for larger hands and better balance with longer lenses, without blocking the battery door or tripod thread. It is purely ergonomic, with no shutter button or extra battery. The Speedlite EL-5 Ver.2 also arrives at $379: a stills flash with 76 Ws of energy, a maximum guide number of 60m at ISO 100 and 200mm, and a 1.2-second full-power recycle from its LP-EL battery. It requires the multi-function shoe, so it will not fire on older EOS bodies with the conventional hot shoe.

How the price compares

The original R8 launched at $1,499 body-only and $1,699 with the RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM. The Mark II is $1,899 and $2,099 for the same two configurations, so a $400 increase for IBIS, a joystick, Wi-Fi 6, a deeper buffer, and a new body. Against Canon’s own lineup, the $2,499 EOS R6 V offers 7K RAW and active cooling for $600 more, though without a viewfinder.

Outside the Canon system, the obvious comparison is the Nikon Z5II, which landed in April 2025 with a 24.5MP BSI sensor, IBIS, dual UHS-II SD slots, 4K60, and internal N-RAW at a lower launch price. In my opinion, Canon is banking on its color science, the RF lens range, and Dual Pixel AF to justify the premium, and for a lot of buyers that will be enough. For the video-first crowd, the single slot and micro HDMI keep it firmly a B-camera or a gimbal camera rather than a primary tool.

Price and availability
