Tune into this week’s podcast episode where Johnnie sits down with Florian, the mastermind behind the CineD Databases, to delve into the origins, development, and future plans of this invaluable resource for filmmakers. Tune in to Focus Check Ep22!
This week’s show sponsor is FUJIFILM – Watch this week’s one-minute tip at 23:38 in the show and learn about some important qualities you should look for when choosing an on-camera monitor.
Florian explains how he transformed a personal project into a comprehensive digital database that has become a vital tool for the filmmaking community.
He also shares his journey from previously working at a camera rental company, where he frequently answered customer questions about camera specs and recording times, to then creating a database, now known as the CineD Databases, that streamlined information retrieval.
What began as simple printouts evolved into a robust digital resource that saves filmmakers time and frustration. The conversation highlights the meticulous process of testing new cameras in-house, noting every recording mode and capability. Florian explains the importance of cross-referencing data from lens manufacturers and the challenges of gathering accurate information for older lenses, often requiring direct contact with retired product managers.
One of the standout features discussed is the CineD Lens Coverage Tool, which combines data from cameras and lenses to show if a lens can cover a specific sensor mode, considering potential vignetting and other issues. This tool exemplifies CineD’s commitment to providing reliable and detailed information.
Looking ahead, Florian hints at future enhancements, including tools to simplify the selection of anamorphic lenses and address common user inquiries. He emphasizes the importance of user feedback in shaping the Databases. He also encourages listeners to log in and register to access certain tools, which helps us gather metrics and improve our offerings.
Stay tuned until the end for updates on the latest tools and features being developed for the CineD Databases.
