DaVinci Resolve 20.2 Brings ProRes RAW, Better Immersive Workflows, and AI Fog Effects

Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve 20.2, a free update that introduces long-awaited Apple ProRes RAW support, immersive EXR workflows, and AI-driven atmospheric effects. With improvements across editing, Fusion, and color grading, the release significantly expands Resolve’s capabilities for filmmakers, VFX artists, and colorists.

Unlike many incremental updates, DaVinci Resolve 20.2 delivers major advances that impact both creative flexibility and technical workflows. From native ProRes RAW decoding on all platforms to direct streaming to Apple Vision Pro, the update strengthens Blackmagic’s position in both traditional and immersive post-production environments.

ProRes RAW support across platforms

DaVinci Resolve 20.2 now natively decodes Apple ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ on macOS, Windows, and Linux. This long-requested addition eliminates the need to transcode ProRes RAW into formats such as ProRes 422 before editing, preserving image quality while saving time.

The update is particularly relevant for mirrorless and cinema camera users from brands like Panasonic, Canon, Fujifilm, Sony, Nikon, and others whose models support ProRes RAW recordingΒ . Even Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max can now record directly in ProRes RAW, and those files are immediately compatible with Resolve 20.2.

Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, emphasized that the move extends across Blackmagic’s own hardware ecosystem as well: future firmware for Pocket Cinema Camera models and Video Assist monitors will add ProRes RAW recording support.

Immersive workflows for URSA Cine

For productions shot with the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive, Resolve 20.2 introduces full EXR workflows. Blackmagic RAW clips can now be exported and imported in EXR format, preserving stereoscopic information and lens metadata for VFX turnovers and finishing.

In addition, immersive content from the Fusion page can be streamed directly to Apple Vision Pro headsets for real-time review. Resolve now supports stereoscopic output in both side-by-side and top-bottom formats, immersive world pose rotations, and stereoscopic node stacks.

Editing refinements and ripple discipline

The edit page gains improved ripple trim behavior. Ripple edits are now independent of auto track selection, giving editors per-track control without disturbing sync. The trim editor opens automatically during dynamic trimming, but users can switch to a single viewer mode in preferences. Source and destination patching has also been streamlined, and synced audio can be detached while maintaining timeline alignment.

Other highlights include:

  • Replay stinger transitions that behave more reliably in interlaced timelines (Cut page).
  • Direct menu actions for moving keyframes, plus improved timeline curve and keyframe editor controls.
  • Guides with individual colors and lock states, and an option to ripple delete silence for faster dialogue cleanup.

Fusion and AI-driven effects

In Fusion, MultiText tools now offer global alignment and transformation controls, making it easier to scale or reposition multiple layers at once. The Fusion renderer supports multilayer outputs, while USD tools can handle animated image inputs. Performance has also doubled for the surface tracker.

Resolve 20.2 debuts a new AI-based Resolve FX calledΒ Cinematic Haze. This effect simulates atmospheric depth and scattering, letting colorists add fog, smoky turbulence, or extend light rays with realistic results.

Expanded codec and I/O support

Beyond ProRes RAW, Resolve 20.2 adds:

  • Samsung APV encoding.
  • Sony ARW still image decoding.
  • ARRICORE clip support.
  • Single-frame WebP and GIF importΒ Β .

For audio, Fairlight includes new project settings for ramp-to-play times and disabling soft fades between edits.

Availability and system requirements

DaVinci Resolve 20.2 is available now as a free download for both the free and Studio versions. Blackmagic advises users to back up project libraries before upgrading, since projects opened in 20.2 cannot be reopened in 19.1.4.

The update requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Windows 10 (or Windows 11 ARM on Snapdragon X Elite), or Rocky Linux 8.6 with a GPU supporting OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12.8.

Conclusion

DaVinci Resolve 20.2 cements the platform’s role as both a high-end grading tool and an all-in-one editor. By finally adding ProRes RAW across all platforms, streamlining immersive workflows, and offering new AI-driven creative tools, Blackmagic has delivered an update that matters for professionals in nearly every segment of filmmaking.
