Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve 20.3, a significant update that introduces support for up to 32K resolution on Apple M5 Macs, enhanced timeline backup management with named snapshots, improved metadata handling for large-scale projects, and background rendering for iPad users on iPadOS 26. The update is available now as a free download.
The headline feature of version 20.3 is undoubtedly the 32K resolution support, which arrives alongside Apple’s new M5 processors. This capability opens the door for working with footage from Blackmagic’s own URSA Cine 17K 65 camera, as well as creating content for large format displays, high-resolution VR experiences, and immersive projects requiring extensive visual effects work. For facilities invested in the Apple Silicon ecosystem, this represents a substantial leap in what’s possible within a single workstation environment.
One of the most requested workflow improvements in DaVinci Resolve 20.3 addresses how editors manage project versions. The new timeline backup system now allows users to create custom named snapshots for versioning, eliminating the need to maintain multiple timelines in the media pool just to preserve different editing stages.
This means you can keep a single timeline while generating clearly labelled backup versions that remain easy to locate when you need to revisit earlier revisions. For collaborative environments or projects with extensive revision cycles, this should streamline what has traditionally been a somewhat cumbersome process. The feature builds on the existing backup functionality but adds the organizational clarity that professional workflows demand.
Version 20.3 brings several editing improvements that address common pain points. A new Edit menu action allows users to insert a custom-sized gap at the playhead position, and speed change and duration change actions now properly follow sync lock behavior.
The subtitle and caption workflow has received attention as well, with an improved context menu that provides faster access to cut, copy, paste, and delete actions. Clip color adjustments are also more accessible. For those working with reversed footage, DaVinci Resolve now delivers more accurate match frame results for clips with negative speeds, and the software remembers your source timeline selection when switching between pages.
New assignable keyboard shortcuts include the ability to start a media pool search and open clips in the timeline with the source viewer. These may seem like minor additions, but for editors working at speed, every saved keystroke compounds over a long session.
Perhaps the most significant workflow enhancement for post-production facilities managing large projects is the expanded metadata functionality. DaVinci Resolve 20.3 now supports adding metadata fields as media pool bin columns, making it easier to view and sort clips based on custom criteria.
The update also introduces ALE (Avid Log Exchange) import and export support for media pool metadata, which should improve interoperability with facilities using Avid-based workflows. Users can now create custom metadata for unknown fields during import, and exported metadata files include custom metadata fields. The media pool views and state are now retained for each project, so your organizational preferences persist between sessions.
For productions dealing with hundreds or thousands of clips, these improvements address real bottlenecks in the asset management pipeline. The ability to customize metadata columns and maintain that organization across import/export cycles represents a meaningful step forward for DaVinci Resolve’s viability in large-scale broadcast and feature film environments.
On the creative side, DaVinci Resolve 20.3 adds alpha channel support for the Film Look Creator, Film Damage, and Analog Damage effects. This allows these stylized looks to be applied more flexibly in compositing workflows where transparency matters.
The update also brings improved performance for Resolve FX Noise Reduction, which should benefit anyone regularly working with high-ISO footage or material shot in challenging lighting conditions. Blackmagic hasn’t provided specific benchmark figures, but any improvement to noise reduction processing is welcome given how computationally intensive these operations can be.
For those working in high dynamic range, version 20.3 adds the ability to embed HDR10+ metadata in QuickTime and MP4 encodes, along with support for IMF workflow for HDR Vivid and Audio Vivid formats. New broadcast safe aspect ratio presets for 2.39 and 2.40 have been added as well.
Stereoscopic 3D users can now set stereoscopic mode in clip attributes for MXF clips, and issues with immersive world pose when using Fusion tools have been addressed. The update also fixes a tracking issue that occurred when using high-quality deinterlace in Fusion.
For DaVinci Resolve on iPad, the 20.3 update introduces background rendering on iPadOS 26. This allows users to start a render and switch to another application while the export continues, a capability that desktop users have long taken for granted but which represents a significant usability improvement for mobile workflows.
The update addresses several issues including decode problems with compressed ARW clips, an AI Music Remixer bug that was muting audio on macOS 26.1, a possible QuickTime decode hang on Windows, and a Remote Monitor startup issue on Windows. Loading issues with some deep OpenEXR files have also been resolved.
One notable change: starting with DaVinci Resolve 20.3, OpenCL mode for GPU processing is no longer supported on macOS. Users will need Metal-compatible hardware going forward.
Regarding project compatibility, Blackmagic notes that while the project libraries remain compatible with DaVinci Resolve 19.1.4, individual projects created or opened in 20.3 will no longer be accessible in the earlier version. The company recommends a full project library backup as well as individual project backups before opening projects in the new version.
The minimum requirements remain largely unchanged. Mac users need macOS 14 Sonoma or later with 8 GB of RAM (16 GB for Fusion work) and Apple Silicon or a Metal-compatible GPU. Windows users need Windows 10 Creators Update with 16 GB of RAM (32 GB for Fusion) and a GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM supporting OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12.8. Linux users require Rocky Linux 8.6 with 32 GB of RAM and a discrete GPU with similar specifications.
NVIDIA users on Windows should update to Studio driver 570.65 or newer, while Linux users need version 570.26 or later.
DaVinci Resolve 20.3 is available now as a free download from the Blackmagic Design website. The free version includes all the same high-quality processing as DaVinci Resolve Studio (update here) but limits output to Ultra HD resolution and supports only a single GPU on Windows and Linux. Features like multiple GPU support, 4K+ output, temporal and spatial noise reduction, various AI-based tools, HDR grading tools, camera tracker, voice isolation, and surround sound require the Studio version.
The 32K support is certainly impressive, though most users will benefit more from the practical workflow improvements like named timeline snapshots and enhanced metadata handling.
