DJI RS 3 Mini Announced – Lightweight Gimbal with Easier Vertical Shooting Mode

DJI RS 3 Mini is a new 3-axis gimbal stabilizer that weighs 850g (1.8 lbs) and it’s able to carry payloads of up to 2kg (4.4 lbs). Thanks to the dual-layered quick-release plate design, the camera can mount directly to the side arm for vertical shooting which saves weight. The gimbal is available now for $369.

Today, the Chinese tech giant DJI announced a new 3-axis gimbal stabilizer. After last year’s DJI RS 3 and RS 3 Pro announcements, the company now aims to offer a more compact and lightweight alternative for lighter mirrorless cameras – let’s take a short look at the new DJI RS 3 Mini.

DJI claims that the new RS 3 Mini is the company’s smallest camera gimbal, but it still offers pro-level features. So how light is it really? DJI says the RS 3 Mini weighs 795g (1.7 lbs) in vertical mode or 850g (1.8 lbs) in horizontal mode which is 50% lighter when compared to the RS 3 pro.

Despite the reduced weight, the gimbal is able to carry payloads of up to 2kg (4.4 lbs). DJI mentions a few popular camera-lens combos that are supported: Sony a7SIII + 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens, Canon EOS R5 + RF24-70mm f/2.8 STM lens, or FUJIFILM X-H2S + XF 18-55 mm f/2.8-4 lens. For the full list of compatible camera models, you can visit DJI’s compatibility page. From my experience, the lens affects the compatibility more than a camera as the setup will often be too front-heavy.

Easier vertical shooting

The weight savings in the vertical mode are possible due to DJI’s dual-layered quick-release plate design. The quick-release bracket mounts directly to the side arm of the gimbal and the lower arm can be completely removed, making shooting vertically a lot easier. This is smart as you do not have to carry unnecessary weight when filming vertically. Furthermore, RS 3 Mini features an upper plate with a new curved placement guide, which prevents the camera from rotating and loosening.

Other features

There is a NATO port on the side for mounting accessories such as a DJI briefcase handle, a fill light or a microphone. Thanks to the Bluetooth wireless shutter control, many of the compatible camera’s features can be controlled from the gimbal – including the record start/stop button and front dial to focus or zoom. With the Ronin app, users can set the RS 3 Mini to perform intelligent shooting functions such as timelapse, track recording, or panorama.

The third-generation stabilization algorithm known from th RS 3 Pro should ensure smooth movements according to DJI. The gimbal arms allow for 360° rotation. For easy control and settings, the RS 3 Mini features a 1.4″ color touchscreen. The battery is integrated into the removable handle and DJI claims, the RS 3 Mini can operate for up to 10 hours on a full charge, which takes around 2.5 hours.
