DZOFILM Vespid 2 Cine Lens Series Introduced – New Design and 20% Lighter

We sat down with Susanne Wu from DZOFILM to talk about the newly launched Vespid 2 cine lens series. Announced only a few days before IBC 2025, this is the final version of the project, now shipping in six focal lengths: 18mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm.

The original Vespid primes gained traction among independent filmmakers for their compact size and consistent look. We had a ‘first look’ here. The new Vespid 2 series builds on that base with lighter builds, faster apertures, and broader format coverage.

Lighter, faster, and larger coverage

Susanne explained that the Vespid 2 lenses are about 20% lighter than the original Vespid series, weighing between 760g and 850g (1.67–1.87 lbs), with an average of around 800g (1.76 lbs). All six share a consistent T1.9 aperture, a step faster than the earlier versions. Format coverage has also expanded: apart from the 18mm, every focal length can cover Blackmagic’s 17K sensor, as well as medium format and some 65mm formats.

Optical design updates

Vespid 2 is a completely new design compared to the first generation. Image quality across the set is more consistent, according to the company, with tighter control of chromatic aberration, flaring, and distortion. The lenses now lean toward a modern rendering, with cleaner coatings that keep flare under control across all focal lengths.

Cooke/i support and camera integration

A major upgrade in Vespid 2 is the built-in Cooke/i protocol. DZOFILM licensed the technology and integrated it across the lens line, enabling cameras such as the ARRI Mini LF, Sony Venice, and Blackmagic URSA 12K/6K to record iris, focal length, focus distance, and depth of field. Metadata is transmitted through a built-in LEMO connector, giving compatible cameras direct access to this information. As Susanne pointed out, this kind of metadata can be especially valuable in post and virtual production workflows, where accurate lens data speeds up compositing and VFX alignment.

A broader lineup

Beyond the Vespid 2, Susanne noted that DZOFILM has expanded steadily since their founding in 2019, now offering primes, anamorphics, zooms, and macros. The company plans to keep broadening their range while refining existing lines.

Price and availability

The lenses are already available through resellers, with pricing between $1,200 (€1,040) and $1,300 (€1,200) per lens. There is also a 6-lens kit available for $6,289 / €5,422.65. Stock is confirmed to be shipping at the time of IBC.

The lenses ship in PL mount, but DZOFILM’s Octopus adapters allow them to be used on E-mount, L-mount, or RF cameras.
