EXOCAGE Camera Cage System for LUMIX S1II and S5II Series Available

EXOCAGE is a custom cage system for LUMIX S1II and S5II series cameras that can turn the camera into a “box-style” rig with power management included. Made in Italy, the EXOCAGE system comes in multiple versions, and prices start at €199.

We all know the traditional (rather minimalistic) camera cages that only offer physical protection with mounting points for the camera body, keeping its small footprint. Filmmakers have been wrapping their mirrorless cameras in these kinds of cages for a long time now.

Some companies have taken a different approach – offering a bulkier cage that turns a mirrorless camera into a box-style “cinema” camera, adding useful built-in accessories, such as power management. I feel like these rigs have gotten increasingly popular lately. As an example, we have seen the Camera Foundry with the CineBack line of camera rigs.

The Italian-based company Metamorphosis 3D now also offers a custom cage system called EXOCAGE. It consists of 3D-printed parts assembled together with metal cheeseplates, threads, and other small parts. They claim all the products are also made in Italy, so it seems this could be a suitable alternative for European filmmakers, as the shipping time, as well as import fees, etc are expected to be smaller compared to an overseas purchase. Let’s take a quick look at the EXOCAGE system.

EXOCAGE system

The cage system from Metamorphosis 3D comes in a few different configurations – the regular EXOCAGE CONNECT and COMPLETE include the EXOCAGE power management unit with the V-mount plate in the back. EXOCAGE mini is a minimalistic setup with a simple (V-mount or NPF) battery plate at the back without any connections or SDI.

The EXOCAGE COMPLETE is the company’s flagship cage system.  The way they put it, it is a fully integrated, ready-to-shoot system. The EXOCAGE COMPLETE includes:

  • 3D-printed EXOCAGE body
  • Analog record button
  • Custom 1 & custom 2 analog buttons
  • 2× cheeses plates
  • 2× NATO rails
  • 2× BNC female-to-female adapters
  • HEX key
  • ZGCINE VM-VP1 V-Mount battery plate
  • ZGCINE MD-P4 D-TAP splitter
  • Blackmagic Design Micro Converter HDMI to SDI 3G
  • All required connection cables (HDMI and USB-C)

The EXOCAGE is supposed to work by attaching the front plate and securing it with the screws, then sliding the rear section into place; the rig is ready for shooting. Like other systems of this kind, the idea is that you leave the camera’s display open on the side and let it rest on the pad. Thankfully, it seems that the EXOCAGE leaves some space behind the camera so air can circulate and cool the back side. The cage, however, does not offer a built-in fan for the camera.

There are, of course, multiple mounting threads on both cheese plates, with more on the camera body itself.

Compatible with MOFAGE POCO adapters

It is worth noting that Metamorphosis offers a special version of each EXOCAGE model that is compatible with the MOFAGE POCO I & II PL mount adapters. This model features a flat front panel on the side so you can comfortably rotate the ND dial or remove/insert the whole ND filter unit. The cage also offers mounting points below the adapter to further secure it to the camera body to prevent any unwanted wiggle or strain when using heavier PL glass.

The standard version is then compatible with most other lens adapters (without the ND filter unit).

Other cameras supported in the future?

Currently, it seems the creators only offer the EXOCAGE system for LUMIX cameras (namely the S5II, S5IIX, S1II, S1IIE, and S1RII). From what I found, more camera models should be supported in the future – Sony FX3 and FX30, Nikon ZR, and others. The Sony FX3 and FX30 were previously supported with the EXOCAGE V1, but now it seems the team is working on a V2, and I no longer found the V1 anywhere on the site.
