FUJIFILM has just rolled out an interactive online tool that can help you get familiar with their GFX ETERNA 55 large-format cinema camera. The simulator is free to use and lets you virtually explore every button and menu. Let’s take a look!
Since its official launch in September last year, the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 has drawn quite a lot of attention, as the company’s first fully-fledged cinema camera and a relatively accessible gateway to the ‘larger than full-frame’ world. In case you missed it, make sure to check out Johnnie’s first-look review and short documentary here.
The camera has already received a major firmware update, enabling external HDMI/SDI RAW recording to Atomos devices, and its massive 4:3 Open Gate sensor (43.8 × 33.9mm) gained it an official “Filmed for IMAX” certification last month. Now, if you’re planning on putting your hands on this intriguing camera, here’s something that can help you out.
Camera menu simulators are an invaluable resource for operators and camera assistants to get acquainted with a specific camera system, especially when there’s no time or budget for proper prep. Major manufacturers like ARRI and Sony (VENICE 2 / BURANO) already offer this tool for their high-end cinema cameras, and now FUJIFILM does too.
Overall, operating the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 is a pretty straightforward experience. While the feel of a camera’s menu is subjective and often controversial, the UI of the GFX ETERNA 55 is simple and intuitive, with items placed exactly where you’d expect them to be. A camera menu simulator, however, can still come in handy, especially if you’re coming from a different platform and you’re renting the camera for the first time on a job.
After launching the simulator, you get virtual access to the 1st AC side of the camera and can start playing around with menus and buttons. There are very few limitations to what you can do, so it essentially feels like having the GFX ETERNA 55 in your hands. The tool works on both desktop and mobile, so you can even pull it up on set as long as you have an internet connection.
The FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 camera simulator is now available for free consultation on the manufacturer’s website. The camera is available to order at B&H and CVP, and the body-only option retails for $16,500 or €13,450 (excl. VAT).For more information, please visit FUJIFILM’s website here.
