FUJIFILM has released the first chapter of their hands-on video series for the GFX ETERNA 55, with imaging specialist Michael Bulbenko walking through the camera’s physical layout and included accessories. This introductory chapter covers everything from mounting options and power systems to lens adaptation and the dual-sided control layout.

Michael Bulbenko, who has spent over 30 years working in imaging from various perspectives (behind the camera, in front of it, and at the computer), guides viewers through the initial setup process. The video serves as a practical introduction for cinematographers looking to get up and running with FUJIFILM’s medium format cinema camera quickly.

The GFX ETERNA 55 features extensive mounting options right out of the box, with multiple 3/8 inch and one-quarter 20 screw threads on the camera’s bottom. This eliminates the need for additional accessories when mounting to standard tripods or support systems. The camera’s modular design continues with a detachable top handle that slides onto a recessed dovetail and locks securely into position.

What comes in the box

The standard package includes several key accessories. A top handle with multi-pin connectivity provides additional controls and mounting points. A five-inch LCD monitor with 2000 nits brightness comes with a pop-up lens hood and mounting bracket. The monitor bracket features one-quarter 20 threading on one end and 3/8-inch threading on the other, allowing for flexible placement on the handle, camera top, or various screw holes integrated into the camera body.

FUJIFILM includes a PL lens adapter that converts the native G mount to PL, secured with a four-bolt retaining ring. The company recommends using all four bolts for maximum security. An AC power adapter converts AC to a DC 15-volt input for the camera’s rear power port.

Connectivity and I/O

The rear panel houses comprehensive connectivity options. Video outputs include both SDI and HDMI via dedicated ports. BNC connectors provide timecode and genlock input capabilities. A USB-C port and Ethernet connection expand workflow options for tethered shooting or network integration. Audio inputs include a 3.5mm port with a matching 3.5mm headphone jack for monitoring.

Power options are equally flexible. The rear panel features a 15 volt DC input that accepts either the included adapter or larger block batteries for extended shoots. The integrated V-mount battery plate can be adapted to Gold mount systems using third-party accessories. The power switch sits on the upper left side of the camera body.
On the camera front, a two-pin 12-volt output provides power for accessories. The native G mount allows direct attachment of FUJIFILM’s GFX lens lineup, including the 55mm f/1.7, 80mm f/1.7, and 110mm f/2. These lenses enable autofocus functionality with the ETERNA 55, a significant advantage when the situation demands it.

Lens mounting and adaptation

Attaching G-mount lenses follows a straightforward process. Line up the red dots, rotate 45 degrees until it clicks, then engage the locking lever at the top by pushing it to the right. This lever cinches the lens tightly and eliminates any play. For cinematographers preferring standard cinema optics, the included PL adapter mounts to the G mount and locks with the same mechanism, then secures with the four-bolt retaining ring. Third-party adapters enable LPL mount compatibility as well.
The camera supports Cooke /i lens data through pins on the adapter. A multi-pin output port on the right side of the camera provides power and control for Fujinon Doval lenses and select third-party options. A selector switch to the left of the lens mount toggles between manual focus, autofocus, and cine autofocus modes, particularly useful when working with Fujinon GFX lenses.

Dual-sided control layout

One of the ETERNA 55’s distinctive features is its completely mirrored menu screens on both sides of the camera. The button layout remains similar on each side as well, with lock switches that can independently disable controls on the left, right, or both sides. This symmetrical design benefits different shooting configurations and crew positions.
Six primary access buttons with white dots provide shortcuts to common functions in the home screen. These include frame rate, ISO, shutter angle, ND filters, and white balance. While these cannot be reassigned, a user button unlocks another level where shortcuts can be customized. Additional function buttons line both sides of the LCD and the right side of the camera body, all fully programmable.
A large multi-function knob on the bottom left of the camera (from the operator position) controls ND filters, iris, zoom, and focus. This same control is mirrored on the top handle. The playback button sits above the menu button, providing access to recorded clips via the LCD, SDI, or HDMI outputs.

Power management and emergency backup

The left side of the camera houses two access doors. The top door reveals a slot for FUJIFILM’s standard NP-W235 battery, which serves as emergency backup power. This battery continuously charges from the primary power source, whether V-mount, Gold mount, or the DC 15 volt input.
If the primary power source fails mid-take, the camera saves the current clip, stops recording, and enters standby mode. It remains in standby until primary power reconnects, then resumes normal operation within seconds. This safety net proves valuable during time-critical shoots.
In special circumstances, the camera can operate on the NP-W235 alone for short periods. Without external power, most functions remain available except SDI and HDMI outputs. This emergency mode could save essential takes when all batteries are depleted.
The bottom door provides access to media slots. The lower slot accepts CFexpress Type B cards, while the upper slot takes SD cards. A large record button appears on both the left side and front of the camera body.

Top handle functionality

The detachable top handle expands control options. Its multi-function control knob mirrors the body-mounted version. A zoom rocker enables powered zoom control with compatible GFX power zoom lenses. A multi-directional control stick allows repositioning of the autofocus point when using GFX lenses in autofocus mode.
Additional start/stop and programmable function buttons provide redundant controls. A hot shoe on top of the handle accommodates third-party XLR audio adapters, expanding professional audio capabilities.
Availability and resources

This first chapter of FUJIFILM’s hands-on series focuses specifically on physical setup and accessory integration. As we’ve previously covered, the GFX ETERNA 55 will receive multiple firmware updates soon, with additional capabilities planned, including SDI RAW output and MXF playback improvements.
