FUJINON Duvo 24-300mm Portable PL Mount Zoom Lens Introduced

Ahead of IBC 2023 in Amsterdam, which opens next week, FUJINON has just introduced the second lens inside their Duvo series: the HZK24-300mm. This PL mount lens is the first “portable” zoom lens in the Duvo lineup. The lens covers Super35 image sensors and has a 12.5x zoom range. Thanks to the built-in 1.5x expander, it can cover full-frame image sensors or turn into a 36-450mm zoom lens on an S35 camera. So, let’s take a closer look at it!

The first lens in the FUJINON Duvo series, the HZK 25-1000mm F/2.8-5.0 PL mount cinema box lens, was announced in October 2022. Earlier this year, FUJINON announced their lens roadmap for the Duvo HZK lineup, which included two portable PL mount lenses.

Ahead of its initial timeline, FUJINON has just introduced the first lens in the Duvo Portable series: the HZK24-300mm.

FUJINON Duvo HZK24-300mm features

The FUJINON Duvo HZK24-300mm is a relatively compact lens with a length of 27cm/10.6in for a weight of 2.95kg/4.4 lbs. This lens is only available with a PL mount, and the lens mount is not interchangeable. However, the lens is compatible with the ZEISS eXtended Data system, which lets you record lens metadata (FIZ positions).

The HZK24-300mm covers Super 35mm image sensors out of the box with a 28.5mm image circle. Engaging the built-in 1.5x expander turns the lens into a 36-450mm zoom lens. Moreover, this built-in expander allows you to use the HZK24-300mm on full-frame cinema cameras. Indeed, when the expander is turned on, the image circle becomes 41.3mm large, effectively covering full-frame image sensors.

The Duvo HZK24-300mm has a T2.9-4.2 maximum aperture, which is pretty insane considering the 12.5x zoom range it offers.

Lens design

At the moment, there is not much information about the FUJINON Duvo HZK24-300mm lens design. According to FUJINON, the lens uses “large-diameter aspherical elements and Super-ED (extra-low dispersion) lenses, (…) so aberrations are controlled thoroughly. Ghosting, lens flair, and color bleeding are also suppressed to deliver natural, controllable, cinematic footage.”

Regarding specifications, the front diameter is 114mm, an industry standard for matte boxes. The minimum focusing distance is 88cm/34.6in. Lastly, all focus, iris, and zoom rings feature 0.8-pitch gears for use with FIZ systems.

Price and availability

The Duvo 24-300mm should be available in spring 2024 and will be previewed at IBC 2023 in Amsterdam. There is no information about the price yet, but stay tuned to CineD for our exclusive coverage from the show floor!
