Insta360 X5 Camera Released - InstaFrame Mode, Larger Sensor, User-Replaceable Lens, and More

Insta360 has just released a new flagship camera, the X5, which is built on the X4’s foundation but with several notable changes. New features include a larger 1/1.28″ sensor, a longer-lasting battery, a user-replaceable lens system, and a new InstaFrame mode that records both a full 360° video and a flat version for quick viewing. It’s also rugged and waterproof to 15m (49ft), so let’s take a look at the details!

Almost a year ago to the day, Insta360 released the X4, which included 8K30fps capture, a higher frame rate for slow motion, a bigger battery, and more. There was also a major update to their free Insta360 Studio. The X5 includes those features, but some interesting new features have been added.

InstaFrame – record two versions simultaneously

A new shooting mode called InstaFrame has been added that records two files at once: a standard 360° video you can edit later, and a flat, auto-framed version that’s ready to share unedited. You can choose a fixed forward-facing view or a selfie angle that keeps the subject centered. This could be a practical option for situations where creators want the full coverage of a 360° camera but also need a version they can share right away.

A larger sensor for low-light and Active HDR

One of the most significant updates in the X5 is the move to a larger 1/1.28″ sensor, 144% larger than the 1/2″ sensor in the X4, allowing for improved light capture. This is paired with a new triple-processor system that helps reduce noise and retain detail, particularly in low light. There’s also a new dedicated shooting mode, PureVideo, designed for low-light recording. It applies AI-based noise reduction and tone balancing to improve clarity in darker settings without needing manual adjustments. Also, Active HDR now supports 5.7K recording at 60fps, which should help maintain detail and smooth motion in scenes with strong contrast.

User-replaceable lens system

A practical change Insta360 made to the X5 is adding a user-replaceable lens system. Instead of tossing the entire camera after a cracked lens, you can now swap out the damaged element yourself with the Replacement Lens Kit, which the company says is quick and easy. The lenses are also made from a new type of ultra-durable, scratch-resistant glass, hopefully making them less likely to need replacing in the first place.

Extended battery life

Battery life has also been extended. The X5 runs up to 185 minutes in Endurance mode when recording at 5.7K24, a 50-minute increase over the X4’s maximum of 135 minutes at the same resolution. Even at 8K30, it can manage around 88 minutes on a full charge. The new 2400mAh battery supports fast charging, reaching 80% in approximately 20 minutes when using a PD3.0 PPS-certified 30W USB-C charger, with the camera powered off.

Other improvements found in the X5

  • Built-in wind guard and improved audio algorithm – a multi-layer steel mesh Wind Guard.
  • Longer-lasting, faster-charging battery – A 2400mAh battery supports up to 185 minutes of recording in 5.7K, using the power-saving Endurance Mode. Fast charges from 0 to 80% in just 20 minutes.
  • IP68 waterproofing to 49ft (15m).
  • Magnetic mounting system allows for quick accessory swaps.
  • FlowState Stabilization + 360° Horizon Lock provides smooth and stable footage, maintaining horizon leveling.
  • Recording options – the new Twist to Shoot feature enables shooting by twisting a selfie stick back and forth. Other options include Voice Control 2.0, Gesture Control, or pairing with a wireless remote.

Price and availability

The Insta360 X5 is available now for $549.99. It’s also worth noting that Insta360 is now offering a subscription cloud service that offers auto file backup, instant sharing of 360° footage, cloud editing and export, and more. For more information, please see the Insta360 website.
