MID49 has released its Direct Connect FUJIFILM ETERNA 55 XLR Module, a modified TASCAM audio adapter that interfaces directly with the camera’s handle connector. The solution eliminates the need to stack the adapter on top of the camera’s hot shoe, significantly reducing overall rig height.
Back in October, when MID49 released their initial lineup of rigging solutions for FUJIFILM’s large format cinema camera, they also teased this XLR module. The product is now available and addresses a common workflow complaint with the standard TASCAM CA-XLR2d-F adapter: when mounted conventionally on the camera’s smart shoe, the audio unit stacks on top of the handle, creating a tall configuration that can be problematic for many shooting situations.
The MID49 solution takes a different approach. Rather than using the smart shoe interface, the company has developed a custom internal circuit board and cable assembly that plugs directly into the ETERNA 55’s handle connector on the camera body. This allows the TASCAM module to be repositioned entirely, mounting behind the Rainbow Handle or any third-party handle that features an ARRI 3/8-16 thread with locating pins on the back.
The kit includes both the modified TASCAM main module unit and MID49’s proprietary mounting bracket with integrated cable assembly. A miniature rosette built into the mounting bracket enables the 3/8-16 screw to be positioned at various angles, rotating in 22.5-degree increments. This includes the option to lay it completely flat for mounting directly onto a cheese plate, providing flexibility for different rigging configurations.
When connected to the ETERNA 55, the module provides two channels of balanced audio with optional phantom power, supplementing the camera’s internal microphone capabilities. The GFX ETERNA 55 will auto-detect the module once attached, adding additional audio options in the menu system. Users can select a four-channel configuration that combines the two internal scratch audio channels with the two external XLR channels. Audio monitoring can be set to prioritize the XLR inputs over headphones, which is typically preferred for production work.
The TASCAM portion of the assembly retains its standard controls for input selection, attenuation (including a 20dB setting useful for shotgun microphones), and phantom power switching. For complete electrical specifications, MID49 directs users to the TASCAM product manual.
The included microphone holder is removable via two screws, which makes sense given that its default position may not be ideal for all camera configurations. As an alternative, users could opt for a shock mount integrated with a 15mm rod system, attaching it to a viewfinder rod on the side of the camera for better microphone positioning.
This release expands MID49’s growing ecosystem for the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55, which already includes the Base Kit ($749) with top plate and 15mm LWS baseplate, Mid Kit ($1,250) with NATO side arms and Rainbow handle, the DB-13 power distribution box ($895), and various other accessories. The company is among several manufacturers that have developed rigging solutions for FUJIFILM’s first dedicated cinema camera, joining ARRI, Tilta, Kondor Blue, and Bright Tangerine in the accessory space.
The MID49 Direct Connect FUJIFILM ETERNA 55 XLR Module is available now for $795 from the MID49 website, but they offer 10% off for your first order if you sign up to their newsletter. Free ground shipping is offered within the continental United States for orders over $250.
