MID49 has just released a handy accessory for those who often need to quickly switch their camera configuration from horizontal to vertical shooting mode: the L of Steel. This symmetrical plate features plenty of 1/4″-20, 3/8″-16, and pass-through holes to mount quick-release plates on both sides and quickly switch between them while keeping your lens center-aligned. Also, MID49 released two bolt-on ARRI dovetail plates that pair perfectly with it. Let’s take a closer look at these!
As much as we like it or not, being asked by clients to shoot horizontal and vertical content on the same shoot is here to stay. However, most cameras are designed to shoot horizontally, so you can quickly end up with a weird-looking camera rig and lose quite a bit of time if you need to switch to vertical mode. Indeed, you can always crop in your horizontal footage to get a vertical clip, but that’s another story.
To solve that problem, many companies released options, such as the RigWheels 90-degree vertical camera mount, the Tilta foldable Arca baseplate, or the Manfrotto ONE hybrid tripod, to name a few. American manufacturer MID49 is now joining the vertical shooting game with the L of Steel.
The L of Steel is, as its name suggests, a vertical camera bracket entirely made of stainless steel. This plate weighs 63oz/1.8kg and measures 7.5 x 7.5 x 3.6in/19.1 x 19.1 x 9.1cm. As you can tell, it’s not a lightweight product, but this extra thickness should give you no flex, and it must be able to take nearly every kind of camera rig, no matter the weight.
The design of the MID49 L of Steel is symmetrical. It means that if your horizontal and vertical dovetails are aligned, switching between horizontal and vertical modes won’t change your framing, since your lens center will remain the same.
The plate features numerous 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 threaded holes on both sides. Furthermore, it has pass-through holes for attaching quick-release plates, and ARRI-standard dovetails with the included 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 screws.
Pairing perfectly with the L of Steel, MID49 also released two bolt-on ARRI-standard dovetails. These dovetails are available in two sizes: 8 inches (20.3cm) and 12 inches (30.4cm). The dovetails feature safety stoppers and push-button release mechanisms on each end to avoid accidents.
Also, the plate features 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 threaded holes, spaced 1 inch (2.5cm) apart to attach to your tripod plate or the L of Steel.
The MID49 L of Steel is available now for $159/€138.95. The 8-inch and 12-inch bolt-on ARRI dovetails are also available for $149/€129.95 and $199/€173.95, respectively.
