NANLUX has partnered with Munich-based DoPchoice to launch the SNAPBAG Octa 5′ Shallow Soft with NL Mount (SB-O5-NL). This professional octagonal softbox features a 155 cm/5 ft diameter with just 65.5 cm/2.2 ft depth, dual diffusers including a custom inner diffusion layer, integrated eggcrate, and direct compatibility with NANLUX Evoke series lights (900C, 1200B, 2400B, and 5000B).
The collaboration brings together NANLUX’s NL mount ecosystem with DoPchoice’s reputation for precision-built light modifiers designed for demanding production environments. The SB-O5-NL addresses a common challenge for cinematographers working with large sources in confined spaces: achieving broad, naturally soft illumination without the bulk of traditional deep softboxes. The shallow profile makes it particularly practical for interior work or mobile setups where depth clearance is limited.
DoPchoice, recognized worldwide for their SNAPBAG quick-setup systems, has optimized the design for speed-critical workflows. The integrated construction combines speed ring, support rods, and diffusion fabric into a single unit that deploys rapidly on location.
The Octa 5′ Shallow Soft delivers what NANLUX describes as broad, soft illumination with smooth, natural falloff. The key to this output lies in the custom inner diffuser, which combines two materials with different transmission levels to enhance uniformity and softness beyond standard single-layer designs. This dual-material approach aims to eliminate hotspots while maintaining the gentle wrap typical of large-format octagonal sources.
The included eggcrate provides directional control without compromising the inherent quality of the softened output. For cinematographers working in multi-source setups or managing spill, this grid offers precise beam shaping while preserving the softbox’s signature gradual falloff. The octagonal shape itself contributes to the aesthetic, creating rounder catchlights compared to rectangular alternatives.
At just 65.5 cm (2.2 ft) deep, the softbox is significantly more compact than traditional parabolic modifiers of a similar diameter. This makes it easier to position in tight shooting environments where a deeper unit would interfere with walls, talent movement, or camera operation. The reduced depth also improves portability and storage efficiency without sacrificing the broad, wraparound quality that comes from the large 155 cm/5 ft face.
The shallower profile does mean slightly more directional output compared to deeper parabolics, but DoPchoice has balanced this through the dual-diffuser system to maintain even coverage across the beam field. This design choice favors practical versatility over pure throw distance, making it ideal for interview setups, product work, and medium-scale interior lighting.
The Octa 5′ Shallow Soft uses DoPchoice’s integrated design philosophy, incorporating the speed ring, eight rigid support rods, and diffusion fabric into a single deployable unit. Setup involves pushing the rods downward, allowing the softbox to unfold instantly through a lock-catch mechanism. Breakdown reverses the process by unlocking the rods one by one for collapse.
The eight-rod internal structure provides stability and reduces deformation risk over extended use. NANLUX emphasizes that premium materials throughout the construction are chosen for production durability, reflecting both companies’ focus on rental house and heavy-use environments. No additional tools are required for assembly or breakdown.
The softbox is specifically engineered for NANLUX’s NL mount system, providing direct compatibility with the Evoke 900C, 1200B, 2400B, and 5000B. This mount integration ensures secure attachment and proper weight distribution for the larger-diameter modifier. The NL mount’s bayonet-style connection allows for quick changes between light-shaping tools without reconfiguring rigging.
A sturdy carrying bag is included for storage and transportation. After collapsing, the softbox can be immediately stored in the bag, making it practical for mobile productions or rental inventory management. The compact folded size balances portability with the large working diameter.
The SNAPBAG Octa 5′ Shallow Soft with NL Mount (SB-O5-NL) is shipping now at $875 USD, excluding local taxes. More information is available at www.nanlux.com.
