Panasonic LUMIX S 24-60mm f/2.8 Standard Zoom Lens for L-Mount Released - Compact and Lightweight

Panasonic LUMIX S 24-60mm f/2.8 is a new compact and lightweight standard zoom lens for L-mount full-frame cameras. Weighing 544 g (19 oz) and measuring 99.9mm (3.9 in) in length, the 24–60mm f/2.8 features a weather-proofed design, 77mm front filter thread, an assignable focus button, and a control ring. The lens will be available from late June 2025 for $899.

Less than three months after the LUMIX S1R II hybrid flagship camera announcement, Panasonic is again launching multiple new products today. There are two new cameras, a new lens, and upcoming firmware updates. We have a separate article about each of the announcements, so feel free to check out the other stuff too:

Now, let’s dive into the features and specs of the new Panasonic LUMIX S 24-60mm f/2.8 lens for L-mount.

Panasonic LUMIX S 24-60mm f/2.8 – alternative standard zoom lens

Panasonic’s focus point when designing this lens was to keep it as lightweight and compact as possible and provide an alternative to the existing standard zoom lens LUMIX S PRO 24-70mm f/2.8.

I would probably compare this duo to the SIGMA lineup with the 24-70mm f/2.8 standard zoom lens and the 28-70mm f/2.8 Contemporary alternative, which is very lightweight and compact. Instead of sacrificing the wide end like SIGMA, Panasonic decided to sacrifice a few mm on the telephoto end.

If we look at the numbers, the new 24–60mm f/2.8 weighs 544 g (19 oz) and is 99.9mm (3.9 in) long. For reference, the LUMIX S PRO 24–70mm f/2.8 weighs 935g (33 oz) and is 140mm (5.5 in) long. The SIGMA 28–70mm f/2.8 Contemporary, on the other hand, weighs 470g (16.8 oz) and is 101.5mm (4 in) long.

The Hybrid Zoom feature extends the zoom range up to 187mm (7.4 in) for both photos and videos. This uses a smart integration of the digital crop. For autofocus, the lens utilizes a Dual Phase Linear motor. Together with the new optical encoder, the lens’ AF performance should be fast and accurate, according to Panasonic.

For the first time in the S series, the LUMIX S 24-60mm F2.8 lens supports control ring assignment (only available with the S1RII, S1II, and S1IIE). This added feature enables quick access to key settings such as aperture control and exposure compensation through the use of the focus ring as a customizable control ring. There is also an assignable focus button on the lens barrel.

Panasonic claims that the optimized internal barrel structure should suppress focus breathing. Additionally, in high-contrast scenes, micro-step aperture control ensures smooth F-stop transitions, preventing abrupt exposure changes.

The minimum focus distance is 19cm (7.5 inches) at a 24–30mm focal length, and the maximum magnification is 0.3x at 30mm. In terms of optical design, the lens comprises 14 elements in 12 groups  (3 aspherical lenses, 1 UED lens, 2 ED lenses). The aperture features 9 circular diaphragm blades, and it is available between f/2.8 and f/22.

The lens body is dust- and splash-resistant, and it has a 77mm front filter thread.

Price and availability

The LUMIX S 24-60mm f/2.8 lens will be available starting late June. The price has been set to $899.
