Poll: EVF or Monitor – Which Do You Prefer for Your Camera Setup?

EVF or monitor? Sounds like an easy question, right? Well, not so fast. When looking at some of the newer offerings from manufacturers like Sony and Canon in particular, we can see that many of their cameras lack an EVF, so in this poll, we are interested in hearing your opinion. Questions like “Do you care if an EVF is built into the camera?” and “Is having a built-in EVF in a camera a deciding factor for you?” are all valid, but we will concentrate on the basics: What do you prefer to use on your camera, a monitor or EVF?

Let’s face it. There is a whole generation of filmmakers and content creators who have never worked with an EVF (Electronic View Finder)… As sad as it sounds, throughout the years, this piece of vital equipment lost its glory to a bigger and more “extravagant” product, the monitor. Maybe it is a sign of the times, but personally, I can’t imagine myself filming with a monitor only. When using an EVF, one gets an extra point of contact with the camera, which leads to better-stabilized footage. Also, properly exposing your footage becomes easier as external light sources and reflections are eliminated.

Cameras like the Sony FX30 and FX3, next to Canon EOS C70/80 (to name a few), are all arriving without an EVF. When talking to camera manufacturers and asking them why an EVF is not included in their camera designs, they often explain that their research indicates a low demand for including EVFs in cameras. This type of conclusion always surprises us, so we’ve decided to approach our audience directly and ask, “What do you primarily prefer to use on your camera, an EVF or a monitor?”
