Portkeys PT5 III Announced - Lightweight & Affordable 5.4-inch HDMI Monitor

The new Portkeys PT5 III is a 5.4-inch touchscreen on-camera monitor with a 1080p screen and MOVNORM OS with monitoring features. The monitor has HDMI in/out, 3.5mm jacks for headphones and microphone, USB-C PD, and an NP-F plate. The lightweight and compact PT5 III is available now for $169.

The Chinese monitor manufacturer based in Shenzhen is releasing multiple new models this year. A few weeks ago, during the NAB show, we briefly looked at the company’s latest 7″ model – the LS7P. Now, Portkeys releases another affordable monitor, this time with a 5.4-inch display. Let’s take a short look at the new Portkeys PT5 III.

Portkeys PT5 III – 5-inch touchscreen with HDMI and USB-C PD

This monitor has a 5.4-inch touchscreen display (8-bit) with a resolution of 1920×1152. Peak brightness is 800 nits, a contrast ratio is 1000:1, and it has a wide 178° viewing angle.

Because most of the controls happen via the touchscreen UI, the monitor only has three physical switches – one on/off button, a switch to lock the screen, and a battery release button.

In terms of connectivity, Portkeys PT5 III includes the following ports:

  • HDMI input (supporting up to 4K DCI 30p signal)
  • HDMI output (up to 1080p 60fps)
  • 3.5mm headphone jack output
  • 3.5mm microphone jack input
  • USB-C port with PD that can be used to power the monitor
  • USB-A port for firmware updates and uploading custom LUTs

Talking about power, on top of USB-C, there is a single NP-F battery plate at the back of the monitor. According to Portkeys, the monitor only consumes about 7W, so a single Sony NP-F550 battery should be able to keep the monitor operational for over 2 hours.

The chassis of the PT5 III is made out of lightweight ABS and PC plastic. The monitor weighs 154.5g (5.45 oz). It is also fairly compact, measuring 135.1 x 82.5 x 22mm (5.3 x 3.25 x 0.87 in). There are two 1/4″-20 mounting threads with locating pins on the monitor (bottom and right side)

MOVNORM OS with monitoring tools

Thanks to the Portkeys MOVNORM OS, which is included in this monitor, there are a handful of useful tools available:

  • 3D LUT monitoring with 3D LUT HDMI output capability
  • Anamorphic image de-squeeze with all the standard ratios (1.33x, 1.5x, 2.0x) and the possibility to enter a custom aspect ratio from 0.25 to 4.0x.
  • Stretch leg tool: When shooting vertically, you can stretch the bottom part of the image. The stretch leg tool feature can be sent to the HDMI output.
  • Customizable False Color with 13 different colors, including ARRI False Color.
  • RGB and Luma Waveform/Histogram exposure tools. There is also an adjustable Zebra tool.
  • Image Capture and Image Overlay
  • The 360° color grader allows you to modify the Hue and Saturation of a chosen image section. You can accurately identify and isolate a particular color range within the image and adjust it.
  • Built-in image flip.
  • Free rectangle cropping allows you to create a zoomed-in close-up shot inside your image.
  • The peaking function allows you to set a specific peaking range and zone that applies to only a part of the image. You can also zoom inside the image.
  • Framing tools: crosshair, check field, guides, grids, rectangle crop.
  • Adjustable contrast, sharpness, brightness, color temperature, and tint.
  • Audio meters.
  • Monitor adjustments: backlight, contrast, color temperature, sharpness, chroma, brightness, tint, HDR HLG, OSD Flip mode.

Price and availability

The Portkeys PT5 III monitor is now shipping for $169. The package includes the monitor, two HDMI cables (full-size HDMI and micro-HDMI-to-full-size), a safety box, a sunshade, a set of rubber covers, a USB key, and even the Portkeys MH-2 monitor mount. That seems like a very affordable package in my opinion.
