RigWheels has shown us what to expect from their stand at NAB, announcing a new suspending dolly system that is highly portable, expandable and universal. Just watch the video below.
The PortaRail system uses two different types of skate wheels on their RailDolly to ensure smooth stable slides; 4 wheels sit on top of the rails, and 4 roll across the inside of the rails.
The rails that Rig Wheels supply are 40″/1 Metre in length, with a 1.65″ (41.9mm) external diameter. They are made from high-grade 6061 aluminium and are constructed to provide exceptionally low flex. Each length screws seamlessly into the next with an internal thread. This makes the system highly portable, as the maximum packed down length of the dolly will never exceed 1M.
However, RigWheels has designed this system with cross compatibility in mind. Using the above PortaRails is only one way of utilizing this setup. RigWheels has admirably made the rail brackets of the system highly universal, watch the below video:
With an adjustable width and height, and 3 different lengths of crossbar, the dolly system can operate on any piping with an outside diameter between 1″ (24mm) and 2″ (50mm). You can also use square/rectangular rails up to 1-3/4″.
It’s really refreshing to see such a modular and universal product. Investing in grip like this can be a daunting experience, especially when you end up pigeon holing yourself into a system that only works with like branded products. The RigWheels PortaRail system opens a door, not many other products can say you can operate your camera dolly system with borrowed scaffolding pipes from the builder next door.
