Roland V-02HD MK II Streaming Video Mixer Introduced

Roland has just introduced an updated version of its famous V-02HD video mixer: the Roland V-02HD MK II. The concept, button layout, size, and weight of the new version are similar to the previous one, but it now has streaming capabilities via its updated USB Type-C port at the back of the unit. Let’s take a closer look at it!

Back in 2018, we reported about the Roland V-02HD, which was then the world’s smallest video mixer. Fast forward to today with the expansion of live streaming/switching options due to the pandemic, others have followed suit.

However, the V-02HD enjoyed popularity thanks to its affordable price and “basic” features for people that only need to switch between two video sources. To keep up to date, Roland updated the V-02HD with the V-02HD MK II that now has video streaming capabilities.

Roland V-02HD MK II features

The Roland V-02HD MK II is a 1lb/600g streaming and video mixer box with compact dimensions of only 160 x 108 x 51mm. So for content creators on the go, it won’t take that much space and weight in your kit.

At the back of the unit, you’ll find:

  • Two HDMI inputs that can take a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200 at 60P
  • One preview and one program outputs
You can connect an optional expression pedal to switch between your two video sources. Image credit: Roland
  • One CTL/EXP port with a 1/4″ TRS jack. You can use this port to connect a foot switch or expression pedal to the V-02HD MK II for intuitive control.
  • A USB Type-C port to video stream (1080/59.94p maximum resolution). You’ll also use this port if you want to connect it to your computer or iPad for extended control.
  • A 7-17V power input

On the right side of the V-02 HD MK II, there are two 3.5mm jack audio inputs (mic/line), as well as a headphone output. Also, you can use the embedded stereo audio from your HDMI sources if you want to spice up your audio mix.

Advanced features

You got it: the Roland V-02HD MK II is a fairly simple device, which does simple tasks very well. Plug your two HDMI sources, connect the USB-C output to your computer, launch your streaming software, and you’re ready to go live.

But, if you want to dive deeper, Roland’s software and the upcoming remote control apps for iPad/macOS/Windows (coming in late 2021) can step up your game. Indeed, the V-02HD MK II has 14 built-in effects, including colorize, negative, RGB replaces, wave, and so on. Also, you can set up picture-in-picture windows, add titles, lower thirds, key out a green/blue screen, and much more.

For ease of use, there is a 1/4″-20 mounting point at the bottom of the unit so you can attach it to a tripod/magic arm.

Price and availability

The Roland V-02HD MK II is available now for $395.00, which is more affordable than the Mark 1 launched at $650.00 back in the days. As a direct comparison, the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini retails for $295, and the FEELWORLD LIVEPRO L1 is $299.
