SIGMA fp and fp L Firmware Updates - New Color Mode, Camera to Cloud Support and More

SIGMA have just released two new firmware updates for both its fp (version 5.00) and fp L cameras (version 3.00). You’ll now benefit from a new “warm gold” color mode, support for 4TB SSD when recording externally, and Camera to Cloud support when used with an Atomos monitor/recorder. So let’s take a closer look at all these new features!

The SIGMA fp was released in October 2019, while the fp L, which features a full-frame image sensor, was launched in March 2021 along with the handy EVF-11. If there is one thing hard to deny, it’s the fact, the company puts a lot of effort into adding new features later down the road with numerous firmware updates since both launches. Last year, both cameras gained a False Color exposing tool, focus ring control, and much more.

This time, SIGMA is back with two firmware updates – ver. 5.00 for the fp and ver. 3.00 for the fp L – which further enhances the cameras’ capabilities.

SIGMA fp and fp L firmware updates – what’s new?

With the new firmware updates for the fp and fp L, here are all the new features and functionalities SIGMA added:

  • A new color mode called “Warm Gold”: SIGMA says it should “create a mellow atmosphere with subdued tones and warm colors. It combines the staging ability to create a story with the versatility to be used in a wide range of scenes.” Of course, this is a “baked-in” look, ideal for fast turnaround projects, but the fp LOG will still give you the most dynamic range from the camera’s sensor.
  • Support for 4TB SSD if you want to record externally: a 4TB SSD allows you to record over 100,000 RAW pictures of fp L or 150 minutes of RAW movie data. SIGMA recommends the LaCie Rugged SSD 4TB.
  • False Color was added with the previous firmware update, but it is now enhanced with the addition of the EL ZONE system.
  • “Focus frame only” has been added to the information display menu in the Display mode setting. “Focus Frame Only” appears in the menu only when the shooting style in STILL mode or CINE mode is set to STILL-like.
  • The camera can now be switched off even during long exposures.

  • Support for Camera to Cloud (C2C): SIGMA updated the RAW output function from the HDMI terminal to support the cloud solution provided by Atomos. It’ll be compatible with ATOMOS Cloud, ATOMOS Ninja V+ with ATOMOS Connect, and Frame.io. ProRes RAW will be recorded to SSD on the ATOMOS recorder. In addition, H.265 proxy file will be uploaded to Frame.io. Please note that you’ll also need to update your Atomos monitor recorder. The Atomos firmware update will be announced at a later date.
  • Added new settings to the Director’s Viewfinder mode: the new additions are the Open Gate mode with anamorphic de-squeeze of the ARRI ALEXA LF and Mini LF. There are six de-squeeze ratios: 1.25, 1.3, 1.5, 1.65, 1.8, and 2.0.

All these updates are welcomed and such an accomplishment considering how compact and lightweight both the fp and fp L are!
