Sony has unveiled the FE 100mm F2.8 G Master Macro, the company’s first G Master prime lens designed specifically for macro photography. With native 1.4× magnification, compatibility with teleconverters for up to 2.8× life-size reproduction, and a host of refinements for both stills and video, the lens aims to set a new benchmark for close-up imaging.

For years, Sony’s FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS has been a workhorse lens for close-up shooters. Now, the new FE 100mm F2.8 GM Macro introduces G Master-level optical and mechanical refinements to this segment. The lens offers a slightly longer focal length and significantly higher reproduction ratio, reaching 1.4× natively compared to the 90mm’s 1.0×. When paired with Sony’s 1.4× or 2.0× teleconverters, magnification extends to 2.0× and 2.8× respectively, opening creative possibilities for photographing subjects as small as fabric fibers or insect wings in extreme detail.

Optical design and rendering

Inside, the lens is constructed from 17 elements in 13 groups, including two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements. This combination minimizes chromatic aberration and suppresses onion-ring bokeh. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II is applied to reduce flare and ghosting, even in backlit conditions, while an 11-blade circular aperture helps create soft, rounded out-of-focus highlights. The result, according to Sony, is high-contrast imagery with smooth background separation and sharp detail across the frame.

Autofocus speed and precision

One of the headline improvements over the FE 90mm Macro G OSS is autofocus performance. Powered by four XD linear motors driving a floating focus system, the FE 100mm GM Macro achieves AF speeds up to 1.9× faster than its predecessor. It can track subjects at up to 120 fps on high-speed bodies like the α9 III, making it suitable not only for macro stills but also for demanding slow-motion video workflows. Reliable AF should also make shooting moving macro subjects, such as insects, significantly easier.

Stabilization optimized for macro

The lens incorporates Optical SteadyShot, which works in coordination with in-body image stabilization on compatible Alpha cameras. Stabilization has been refined for macro use, compensating not only for yaw and pitch but also for X/Y shift and even depth shake along the Z-axis. This makes handheld macro photography more practical, where even the smallest vibrations can otherwise ruin an image.

Handling and control improvements

Sony has placed strong emphasis on operability. The lens features a sliding focus ring that moves between AF/MF and Full MF modes, with mechanical end stops at minimum focus and infinity for intuitive manual control. A printed magnification and distance scale further aids precision. A new full-time DMF switch allows immediate manual override, even on camera bodies that don’t natively support this feature. In addition, Sony has added a dedicated focus mode switch and redesigned the focus range limiter, with a more practical “near” mode beginning at 0.7 m instead of 0.5 m. These changes are aimed at reducing focus hunting and speeding up operation in real-world macro shooting.

Additional features for professional workflows

The lens introduces an aperture ring with de-click option and an iris lock, catering to both still photographers and videographers. Two customizable focus-hold buttons are included, along with weather-resistant sealing and a fluorine-coated front element for easier cleaning. At 646 g, the lens remains relatively lightweight for its class while offering robust build quality.

Use cases and versatility

While the primary target is macro photographers/filmmakers, Sony also highlights applications beyond close-up work. The 100mm focal length and F2.8 aperture make it suitable for portraits, product photography, food, fine art reproduction, and even scientific documentation, where edge-to-edge resolution and magnification accuracy are crucial.
