Sony FX6 Firmware Version 6.00 Released – BIG6 Interface, External Blackmagic RAW, AF Improvements, and More

Sony has released firmware version 6.00 for the FX6, a free update that delivers one of the most substantial feature additions the camera has received since launch. The headline additions are the BIG6 home screen inherited from Sony’s CineAlta lineup, external Blackmagic RAW recording via HDMI, and a broad set of workflow, connectivity, and image quality improvements.

The FX6 has been a mainstay in documentary and narrative production since its 2020 launch, and Sony has consistently expanded its capabilities through firmware. We first covered the camera in our hands-on first look and subsequently put it through our lab test. Version 6.00 follows a familiar pattern of trickling down features from higher-end CineAlta bodies, a strategy Sony has executed across previous FX6 firmware releases as well. We reported on V6.00 when it was previewed at BSC Expo 2026, and the production release is now available for download.

BIG6 interface and shooting screen overhaul

The most visible addition in V6.00 is the BIG6 home screen, which consolidates six essential shooting parameters into a single view: frame rate, ISO, shutter, iris or ND filter, Look, and white balance. The interface has been standard on the VENICE and BURANO, and its arrival on the FX6 is a meaningful ergonomic upgrade for anyone operating across multiple Sony Cinema Line bodies on the same production.

Alongside BIG6, Sony has revised the overall shooting screen layout. Camera data is no longer overlaid directly on the image in the viewfinder; instead, black borders frame the image area and carry the status information, keeping the full frame visible during monitoring and playback. Three new assignable functions are also available for the Assignable Buttons tab: Crop Select, LUT On/Off, and AE Level/Mode. One small but practical notation change is worth flagging for those working at 59.94P: the 1/50 shutter speed is now displayed as 1.2F (1/50), bringing the FX6 into line with Sony’s broader shutter notation conventions.

Blackmagic RAW and image quality

V6.00 adds support for external recording of Blackmagic RAW when using RAW video output via HDMI. This enables BRAW capture to a compatible Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorder directly from the FX6 without any hardware modification. Sony recommends verifying compatibility with Blackmagic Design for specific recorder models before relying on it in production. For colorists and editors already working in BRAW pipelines, this is a genuinely useful addition that the firmware roadmap first signalled back in late 2024.

Image quality with User 3D LUT files has also been improved in this update, and a new HLG Mild Base Look preset is now available when the target display is set to HDR (HLG). For operators delivering HDR content directly from the camera, HLG Mild offers a softer, less aggressive HDR grade starting point than the standard HLG preset. The ND filter readout now also supports optical density display in logarithmic notation, a preference among operators accustomed to working with traditional optical ND values rather than stop-based or percentage readouts.

Autofocus and monitoring improvements

Autofocus performance has been improved for productions running at 29.97, 25, 24, and 23.98 system frequencies. Sony has not specified which AF algorithms or subject types benefit most, but any incremental improvement in tracking reliability at these common frame rates is welcomed, particularly in documentary and narrative run-and-gun work where the FX6 is most at home. The update also adds HDMI Focus Magnifier support, extending a function previously unavailable over HDMI output.

For those using the Monitor & Control app, V6.00 unlocks three new remote control capabilities: frame rate settings for S&Q Motion, management of 3D LUT files, including setting attributes and deletion, and a low-resolution mode for network monitoring. Accessing these functions requires updating the Monitor & Control app to version 2.5.0 or later. Note that the Monitor & Control app may not be available in all countries or regions.

Connectivity and network updates

The network menu has been reorganised within the Full Menu, and network settings can now be adjusted directly from the status screen. Network connection speed is also now visible on the shooting screen itself, which is a practical addition for productions relying on live streaming or remote monitoring over varying network conditions.

V6.00 drops support for WPA and WEP Wi-Fi security protocols entirely. Going forward, only WPA2 or WPA3 connections will be available. Additionally, smartphones connected to the FX6 via Wi-Fi Direct can now access the internet simultaneously, removing a previous limitation that required disconnecting from the camera to use mobile data.

Other workflow additions include Camera ID and Reel Number settings on the status screen, an Index screen added to the status screen, support for importing and exporting scene files from external media, and a display change that reflects Camera ID and Reel Number updates for the next clip.

How to download

Firmware V6.00 for the Sony FX6 is available as a free download from the Sony support page. As always, Sony advises connecting the supplied AC adaptor during the update process, removing any connected USB devices, SDI and HDMI cables, microphones, and shoe mount accessories, and ejecting any media cards not required for the installation. Also note:

• When upgrading from version 5.02 or earlier to version 6.00, your previous settings will not be carried over, and the camera will reset to the default settings.
• If you want to carry over your previous settings, save your settings in an All File before upgrading, and then load the saved All File after the upgrade is complete.
