Tilta Left Side USB-C PD Handle with Run/Stop Type VIII Now Available

The new Tilta Left Side USB-C PD Handle with Run/Stop Type VIII integrates Power Delivery fast-charging as well as Run/Stop capabilities via USB-C. This power grip features a dual USB-C interface with cable clamp, has an internal high-capacity battery and offers additional mounting points for accessories. It is now available for $199.

Along with traditional wooden handles, third-party accessory manufacturer Tilta has a whole range of side handles that combine a solid grip for your camera with power or even storage solutions.

After introducing a side storage handle for Sony cameras in September last year, the company is now back with a hybrid grip/power accessory, called Tilta Left Side USB-C PD Handle with Run/Stop Type VIII. So let’s take a closer look!

Tilta Left Side USB-C PD Handle with Run/Stop Type VIII – features

This new handle option from Tilta natively attaches to the left side of your camera cage via a NATO clamp and its angle is adjustable by simply releasing a lever. Moreover, the company separately offers other mounting solutions, such as ARRI Rosette or a 1/4”-20 screw adapter.

The handle features a dual USB-C interface at the top and the design includes a little clamp to secure your USB-C cables. Of the two available ports, one can be used to trigger REC run/stop via a dedicated button on the top of the handle, while the other supports Power Delivery fast-charging up to 60W.

The latter option can be useful if you want to greatly extend your camera’s battery life without adding an additional V-mount or other power sources to your rig. However, if you want to use both functions simultaneously, then you will need to purchase a dedicated dummy battery to USB-C PD cable adapter for your specific camera model.

Power is supplied by an internal cell with a high capacity of 50Wh. This should be enough to keep a mirrorless camera running for a few hours. However, you need to make sure that your camera supports the PD charging protocol. Among the most popular mirrorless cameras, compatible models include the Sony FX3, the Canon EOS R5 and R5C as well as the newly-announced LUMIX S5II.

Size, weight and design

The handle is built of aluminum with anti-slip parts that provide a solid grip, along with the included wrist strap. The accessory measures 117x93x17mm in size and, due to the internal battery, isn’t exactly lightweight. Indeed, it adds about 480g to your camera build.

Finally, this power grip offers additional mounting points to attach extra accessories to your rig, such as a monitor, microphone or small LED light. These include a cold-shoe interface at the top as well as a 1/4”-20 threaded hole with locating points at the bottom. Also at the bottom, you will find a magnetic storage slot for an M3 Allen key that can be used to tighten the USB-C cable clamp.

Price and availability

The new Tilta Left Side USB-C PD Handle with Run/Stop Type VIII is now available to pre-order on the manufacturer’s website. Its official retail price is set at $199, but the company is currently offering a 10% discount until February 9th. The accessory should start shipping in February.
