At IBC 2025, Vocas displayed their first new matte box design in almost a decade. The 4×5.65 Panavision-style two-slot matte box responds to customer requests for a compact, lightweight option. Vocas operates from the Netherlands as both a manufacturer and reseller. The company develops products based on feedback from their showroom operations and direct client interaction.

The release coincides with the industry’s continued shift towards more compact camera systems. Productions increasingly use smaller rigs, driven by improved image quality from smaller camera bodies. Vocas’ Michiel Ruijtenbeek accurately described the current trend by mentioning that, in his opinion, “the times are over when it used to be cool to show up with a huge camera on set. Even clients have now realised that you can get amazing cinema-like quality with a small camera.”

Two-Stage Matte box design

The matte box uses a two-stage construction. Users can remove the front hood section for a more compact setup. This configuration maintains one filter slot in front and another in a removable tray, plus magnetic removable masks. When asked about why Vocas felt the need to design a new matte box, Michiel replied that people were asking them for a compact, lightweight matte box, and the company took the extra step by introducing a complete solution with the possibility of dividing the matte box into two stages, so that the front hood can be taken off.

Materials and construction

The matte box uses nylon-based, laser-printed construction rather than aluminum or carbon fiber. The powder-based manufacturing creates a hood that’s sturdy, flexible, and lightweight. The basic matte box with carbon mask weighs approximately 290 grams as a clamp-on unit.

The system includes a rubberized donut ring that stretches to fit different lens sizes, replacing the need for multiple fixed-size donuts.

Mounting options

The matte box supports multiple mounting configurations:

• 114mm clamp-on (with adapters for 85mm)
• 15mm rod support (with 19mm adapters available)
• Swing-away mechanism for lens changes
• Lightweight support options

Pricing and availability

The matte box system is scheduled to ship by the end of October 2025. Some components may arrive earlier. Carbon fiber parts are the primary cause of delay, though finished versions were displayed at IBC 2025.

• Basic clamp-on matte box (with one white mask): €533 (excluding VAT)
• Hood with carbon top flag: €533
• A-kit (standard matte box with rubberized ring and 50mm adapter): €665
• Complete swing-away system (with hood, rubber ring, and two additional masks): €1,383
