ZEISS Opens Closed Beta for CinCraft Virtual Lens Technology

ZEISS is inviting VFX artists to register for a closed beta of CinCraft Virtual Lens Technology, a Nuke plugin that simulates real-world lens behavior inside 2D compositing. The three-month program is set for December 2025 through February 2026, with limited slots and selection based on experience and technical fit.

ZEISS positions this tool (which we reported about before) as a one-click lens characteristic simulator that brings lens-true results to post workflows, aiming to reduce guesswork and improve consistency between set and suite. The beta centers on a Nuke plugin, powered by GPU rendering, that reproduces nuanced optical traits rather than generic “looks.”

What the virtual lens aims to do

According to ZEISS, the Virtual Lens leverages ray-tracing mechanics to replicate cat-eye bokeh, chromatic aberration, distortion, and focus fall-off, among other characteristics. The idea is to let artists choose from a digital library of lenses much like checking options at a rental house, then apply those properties directly in comp. The goal is photorealistic, lens-true results across scenarios from cleanup and image tweaks to complex VFX shots, with smooth performance via GPU-based rendering.

How the beta works

The closed beta runs December 2025 to February 2026. Selected participants receive access to the CinCraft Virtual Lens plugin for Nuke and will provide feedback through a ZEISS form and direct correspondence. Applications are open now, and ZEISS notes that places are limited, with selection based on relevant experience and technical requirements. Applicants will receive confirmation by email upon submission.

Where this fits in CinCraft

Virtual Lens Technology builds on the existing CinCraft ecosystem, which includes CinCraft Scenario for real-time camera tracking and CinCraft Mapper for frame-accurate lens distortion and shading data used in compositing and matchmoving. ZEISS frames the new tool as another step toward tighter continuity between capture and post.

This beta targets professional VFX and compositing artists who need authentic optical behavior inside Nuke without resorting to time-consuming manual approximations.
