It’s time to take a short break from asking you guys about anything related to cameras (even though it is one of our favorite topics) and start talking about audio. In this context, we would like to determine the importance of including 32-bit float audio in your recording equipment.
If you’ve been in the filmmaking business for some time, you’ve most likely witnessed one of the biggest technical advancements in our field: namely, 32-bit float recording in commercially available, modestly priced audio equipment. For those unfamiliar with this technology, let’s simplify it by saying that it serves as your ultimate safety net when recording audio. Much like RAW for video recording, which adds quality and flexibility over compressed video files, 32-bit audio allows you to overcome clipped recordings or very low-volume sound clips. In other words, even if monitoring audio while filming is not always possible (and recommended), the chances that something will go wrong decrease.
For me personally, I will not buy any microphone (or mic/transmitter) that does not allow 32-bit internal recording. Like many of you, Iβve been in this field long enough to know the importance of a feature like this, especially as an independent documentary filmmaker. The good thing is that growing competition makes this more accessible than ever.

But what about you? Is 32-bit float audio recording important for you when recording in the field? Furthermore, will you still buy audio equipment that does not support this type of standard? Please take a moment to answer our poll, and if you have a spare moment, kindly leave a comment describing why it is (or is not) beneficial for you to record in 32-bit float audio.
