High-speed cinematography has lived behind eye-watering price tags for decades. In our on-camera interview at IBC, Pixboom CTO Dr. Honghoa Huang explains how the Pixboom Spark aims to change that: a compact Super 35 global-shutter camera recording continuous RAW straight to SSD, with 4.6K open-gate capture and creator-friendly workflow.
In our interview with Dr. Huang, he traces the Pixboom Spark back to his academic roots (check out last week’s original article on the specs here). A decade ago, he and colleagues built lab-grade, ultra-high-speed systems for science and industry. The question that followed was simple: why not build a smaller, easier, more affordable tool for content creators? That idea became Pixboom, and Spark is the first product the team is pushing into production. Unlike traditional high-speed rigs that loop into short RAM buffers, Spark is designed to behave like a “normal” cinema camera, rolling continuously to fast internal media and avoiding the stop-capture-dump cycle that slows sets down.
High frame rates demand light, reliability, and repeatability. Dr. Huang stresses three core pillars from the outset: a back-side illuminated Super 35 global-shutter sensor for motion-artifact-free images and better sensitivity at high fps, continuous recording that streams directly to the SSD instead of a buffer, and open-gate flexibility so creators can choose aspect ratios or work with anamorphic lenses without throwing away pixels. He also notes you can set custom resolutions to unlock different maximum frame-rate targets, choosing the best balance of resolution and speed for each shot.
In the interview, Dr. Huang confirms a BSI Super 35 global-shutter sensor with a 4.6K open-gate readout and cites markedly improved sensitivity versus front-side-illuminated designs, which is crucial when you are pushing shutter angles tight to freeze motion. Spark records a proprietary compressed RAW stream, which Pixboom’s desktop app converts to CinemaDNG for grading and finishing in common NLEs and color tools. He adds that the camera records continuously to its SSD module rather than looping into RAM; at the very highest 4.6K settings, he quotes around seven minutes per take before the media fills.
Pixboom’s published specifications back up the core architecture and fill in details: compressed RAW is written at up to 10 GB/s to the removable “Pixboom Pro Card,” and footage can be offloaded over the module’s built-in USB-C at up to 20 Gbps, no separate reader required. Published frame-rate tables list 670 fps at 4.6K open gate, 887 fps at DCI 4K 16:9, and up to 2,182 fps at 2K 2.37:1, along with a 3.5-inch 6.22-M-dot top touchscreen for monitoring and control.
Spark uses Pixboom’s own locking mount with electronic contacts and ships with adapters for Sony E and PL. Dr. Huang says the adapters support electronic communication for iris and metadata. Autofocus is not enabled in the current firmware but is under consideration for future updates. For power, the camera integrates a V-mount plate and also accepts 15–24 V DC-in. Dr. Huang highlights a practical benefit on set: when DC is connected, you can hot-swap the onboard battery without shutting the camera down.
Officially listed connections include 12G-SDI, HDMI 2.0, USB-C, and dual-band Wi-Fi, with a 9-pin EXT offering genlock, timecode, and GPIO. Spark is specified to output up to 4K60 over SDI. The body is a compact machined aluminum enclosure measuring 108×110×130mm (4.3×4.3×5.1 in) and under 1.1 kg (2.4 lbs), which should suit gimbals, robots, and drones.
Dr. Huang’s bufferless approach is the headline: Spark behaves like a regular camera that just happens to shoot very fast. In addition, published materials describe a user-adjustable pre-record buffer, capturing roughly 2–3 seconds before the trigger to help with unpredictable action in sports, wildlife, and documentary work.
On camera, Dr. Huang mentions targets of “about 1,000 fps at 4K” and “about 1,800 fps at 2K,” and notes his personal preference is DCI 4K at 1,000 fps. Current spec sheets from Pixboom’s launch communications list 887 fps at 4K 16:9 and up to 2,182 fps at 2K 2.37:1. Numbers inevitably evolve between prototype and shipping, but the intent is clear: very high frame rates at 4K, even higher at 2K, with global-shutter motion.
In our interview, Dr. Huang quotes a super-early price of $7,499 for the body with one adapter and one SSD, with a $13,000 MSRP, Kickstarter launching September 17th (tomorrow from the time of posting this article), and deliveries expected “in the first quarter of next year.”
Published campaign information lists the super-early tier at $7,999, including a Pro Card, $8,499 for later pledges, and, as mentioned above, a $12,999 MSRP, with deliveries targeted for Q1 2026.
As with many crowdfunded launches, treat these numbers as guidance until production locks! Yet the good thing is we can confirm that it’s a real product, because we’ve touched and tried it, and will shoot an early hands-on during an upcoming trip to India … more on that soon!
If you shoot tabletop, product, or food work, water and fluid dynamics, beauty macro, sports plates, or VFX elements where motion artifacts from rolling shutters ruin shots, Spark’s global shutter and continuous RAW are compelling. Dr. Huang specifically cites water, food, and small-object shots as sweet spots, while open gate and de-squeeze support make the camera relevant for anamorphic creators who want to keep their full field of view. Published specs emphasize anamorphic de-squeeze in monitoring and a roadmap for additional compressed formats and in-camera Log recording, which will help productions that do not need RAW every time.
Spark is an ambitious first camera. If Pixboom can deliver the imaging, the continuous RAW workflow, and the promised ergonomics at scale, more creators will finally be able to explore very high frame rates without renting a lab rig. Check out more details on their website.
