Blackmagic Design released a pretty gigantic update to some of its product lineup last night. Along with the release of DaVinci Resolve 18 Beta, the company also released a new line of Cloud Store devices and two new Hyperdeck products. The new Hyperdeck Shuttle HD and the also new Hyperdeck Extreme 4K HDR are the subject of this post, so read on!
To truly enable seamless online collaboration, Blackmagic Design not only had to update DaVinci Resolve to implement new the functionality, but also release new hardware. The brand new Blackmagic Cloud Store (as well as Cloud Store Mini and Cloud Pod) devices handle the actual data storage and distribution.
But what about browsing vast amounts of footage with ease? That’s where the new Hyperdeck Shuttle HD ($495) comes in.
Hyperdeck Shuttle HD is a recorder/player designed for desktop use as an on-demand media player. This new model supports recording and playback of ProRes, DNx, and H.264 files, as well as PCM or AAC audio. It features a large metal search wheel and traditional broadcast deck controls for quickly browsing through media. HyperDeck Shuttle HD uses HDMI connections, so it’s a great companion to ATEM mini-switchers.
In addition, SD cards, UHS-II cards, and external USB-C hard drives can be used for media recording and playback. The large jog wheel allows you to visually browse large libraries of footage. You can even connect the Hyperdeck Shuttle HD to the aforementioned cloud storage to quickly (and visually) browse the footage stored on it.
Features of the new Hyperdeck Shuttele HD include:
But that’s not all: Hyperdeck Shuttle HD also features a built-in teleprompter! Just feed it formatted text files (*.rtf) instead of video clips and enter the teleprompter mode via the menu system, called Blackmagic OS (you need to connect an external monitor to use it). The Hyperdeck will then switch to a special teleprompter mode that can be easily controlled with the large dial. Pretty handy, indeed!
All the tech specs can be found on Blackmagic Design’s website.
Blackmagic Design also announced a new high-end Hyperdeck, the Extreme 4k HDR ($2,995). This is a new broadcast deck with H.265 4K recording that features a touchscreen interface with integrated scopes and an HDR screen.
This new device also fits seamlessly into the new online collaboration workflow, as it is able to record directly to a Blackmagic Cloud Store and redistribute over the network. And since network connections can sometimes be a little flaky, the Hyperdeck Extreme 4K HDR has buffering in the form of an PCIe flash disk that ensures flawless recording even if the network connection goes down for a few minutes.
This new 4K version might be the right choice for customers who don’t need the (more expensive) 8K version, but still want all the options and flexibility of the Hyperdeck Extreme series.
More features include:
The new Hyperdeck Extreme 4K HDR sells for $2,995. Please find all the tech specs on Blackmagic’s website. The accompanying Hyperdeck Extreme Control has not been changed. it sells for $1,295. Details can be found here.
